It doesn't even carry enough importance to be debated on a website.

As for your "little jest" I'd advise that you refrain from asking people with very stereotypical Jewish surnames if they are on the Germans' side. It's a little too risky if you ask me.

Please accept my apologies, was getting above my station. Just respect, that is all I ask, I have no racist or religious bias in me so don't even think of acusing me in that direction, my only place of worship is St. Marys and I don't mean the church.

On all cenotaphs all around the world you will see the same words "Less we forget". As others have said in any conflict, no matter where, there is usually casualties that should not have been casualties. The Poppy is an emblym of peace not war....it is a reminder of those that fell. As for Fifa those guys wouldn't know the difference between a political statement and a rotten banana. Unfortunately they make the rules and until they are cleared out and cleansed we have to abide by their rulings.

Black arm band with a poppy is a good compromise.

I didn't quite say that the sacrifices weren't worth remembering...I'm interested in why these displays of rememberance have become so public...the displays of public grief at Wooton Basset for example, I cant remember scenes like that from 50's, OK the 60's were relatively quiet but N.Ireland, Falklands etc did we have these public demonstrations of grief?

For the record I am Soton born, both Grandads fought and injured in WW 1, Dad in WW 2 (not injured), Mum helped to build Spit's, I did 7 years in 60's, so decent credentials and I'll remember them all as I always do, in private reflection....but DA, respect to you, you certainy care.

Remember that our armed forces are still involved in a war, which is basically over the product of another kind of poppy. This poppy is to commemorate all who given the ultimate sacrifice, we should never forget any of them. I agree with Beddytare, it is sad that ignorance and misunderstanding has led to the current situation, hopefully the compromise will be bring a solution for the time being.

I think all your comments since have summed mine up perfectly. It is obvious you have no respect and it gives young people a bad name (im only 22). It's not just about remembering people you know who have died, it's about remembering the sacrifices that people made and that they should never be forgotten. The poppy is a symbol of remembrance day and is there to ensure that we never forget what these people gave to ensure we have 'better' lives.

Sadly i think over time they will be forgotten by a lot of people, as it is obvious that people from my generation and generations below are getting more disrespectful and ignorant, just like yourself.

Yet another thread filled with complete idiocy. To those people that are talking down the importance and significance of poppies; seriously, where do you people come from? If you're representing the City of Southampton or Southampton Football Club, then I am ashamed, I really am. Actually i'm ashamed of anybody who has this level of ignorance. Get off your lazy X factor, Playstation, Facebook, Twiter consumed arses and go read a history book, visit a memorial, talk to your grandparents!

A couple of years ago I had the incredible honour of attending the funeral of Harry Patch, the last surviving British soldier to serve in the First World War. Harry had lived until the ripe old age of 111 before he died, and spent most of his life in obscurity before becoming an unlikely celebrity at the age of 100. The last years of his life were spent meeting up with old soldiers from all the countries who fought in WW1, and publicising the need to stop wars like that happening again. He believed that disputes between nations should be settled by discussion and compromise, never by war.

At the funeral his coffin was carried by serving soldiers from the British, French, German, and Belgian armies.

None of us who are lucky enough to have escaped the horror of taking part in a war should ever forget those who were affected, from all sides. The poppy is a symbol of remembrance of all those affected by war, and should be worn with pride.

Back to the topic, I am so pleased that a compromise has been reached by the England team and FIFA.

Remember going to all the museums in school etc, brings home what sacrfices these men and women did for this and other countries. My grandad was in the british navy and my nan a wren, everyone that has died to help insure our present and future deserves to be remembered. <ok>

I'm disrespectful and ignorant am I? Well here are some facts for you: if you try and trace my family back more than two generations, it is almost untraceable. A couple of them escaped the conflict and made it over to this country (thankfully, or I wouldn't exist), and the rest of them were wiped off the Earth. Not because they were sent off to fight, but because the invading Germans came into their hometowns in the Soviet Union and slaughtered them. A few of them were unfortunate enough to be caught up in the Siege of Leningrad, where they eventually starved and presumably ate each other.

All I've said is that I don't need the England team to wear a poppy for me to remember this stuff. It doesn't even need to be November 11th. I know this stuff because I took an interest in history and the stories my Grandfather told me about his family. I am very aware of the sacrifices people have made in going to war, and I am very aware of the large numbers of lives which were lost. If you need a Remembrance Day and a stupid little meaningless poppy to remind you of these facts, then you are the ignorant one my friend. Where do you get off? You're a prick.
