McLaren would be the very definition of a nothing appointment and would certainly struggle to win the fans over unless there was instant success. I can appreciate the logic Evans would see behind it, having England on the CV etc, but wouldn't be an appointment I would be excited by or happy with.
I would like to ideally see an ex-Town player Mowbray, Butcher with Kieron Dyer as assistant. It's time that a bit of Ipswich Town was put back into Ipswich Town.
Butcher? Really? Absolute legend as a player, as a manager. .hell no! As for McLaren, couldn't get derby up with the millions he spent, gawd knows what he'll do with our squad
He did well as a manager until the end of his career. If he took up the job as manager at Town I've no doubt he would put his all into the job and the main ingredient that is missing right now is that the manager doesn't 'get' Ipswich Town at all. Some of the players in our squad do, to be fair.
Thankfully it doesn't have to be that way. But I would say we have a better chance of going up with Mick staying than getting McClaren in. That's what a terrible decision it would be to get him in.
If I had to pick between the two, I'd grit my teeth and go for McClaren. In my opinion, a change is needed. Simple as that. As dull and unexciting a choice as McClaren is, he has tasted success, he does have experience of this division, and he has a CV that McCarthy should envy. We are stagnating under McCarthy, his relationship with a majority of the supporters has broken down, the style of football has regressed rather than evolved, and he seems unwilling to remove his favourites and provide opportunities for a new generation of players. Steve McClaren is so far down my list of preferred managers that I haven't contemplated him as a choice. I seriously hope he isn't the eventual successor, because I think we'd be in more or less the same situation as now. The main problem is that McClaren comes across as a has-been manager looking for the next pay cheque. He fared poorly in recent jobs at Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United. He didn't get Derby promoted despite the amount they spent in the transfer windows, although he was unfortunate not to get them up in 2013/14 when they finished third and undeservedly lost 1-0 in the Play-Offs final against QPR. The fact that our three man managerial shortlist is reportedly Steve McClaren, Jaap Stam, and Tony Mowbray only goes to highlight the lack of a forward-thinking philosophy and football knowledge from our board. Evans has a poor recruitment record, one decent appointment and two catastrophes. He shouldn't be making these decisions alone and if he hadn't surrounded himself by a bunch of 'yes men', then we'd have a better list of potential successors. Fair play to the club for the season ticket price drops. That's the sort of news we like to see.
Not sure that is entirely fair on him.. I know a lot of Derby fans and they still say his side(s) played the best football the club has seen for the best party of a couple of decades. Though clearly they are still frustrated at how his first spell fell apart due to the speculation to the Newcastle job and they seemed to stop playing for the last 6 or 7 matches. His record there is actually still very very good.. And if you take out (or at least put into context) his spell at Newcastle and his 13 games at Forrest (when they were at peak 'Basket Case' mode) his managerial career still stands up as being one of the best English coaches of the past few years. That said, he wouldn't be my choice as I'd rather see someone working their way up the ladder than just bobbing along at Championship level, but if he was to be appointed, it could be a positive move as he has always got his sides playing decent football
I agree Nugg we need a change so desparately that I can only think of a few people that would have me keep MM instead of change.
You know my answer. McLaren - people want sexy footy so to speak, triangles, pass and move - McLaren DOES play the game the way the fans like. ISSUE being he needs a massive budget / wastes a fortune and we haven't a pot to p*** in. This will go down like a lead balloon, and won't happen but right now we need a very steady pair of hands if we're going to release sod all ££££ and NOT gamble. Warnock would be ideal. Sure, crap footy - however we'd know it would be a two season max job. Of course we COULD gamble / someone young etc and it magically click with no budget. You never know, the academy lads may have a season to remember, Huws fit all season etc. IF we can keep certain ones fit.............. that's the issue. I actually think it's dark times. Definitely going to have a look at our relegation odds and look at seriously. Issue for me - * New manager likely to want quite a few new players. * New manager likely to want more technical players. * These players cost ££££. * We have zero budget.......... = AHHH fe..... Lets see who it is!
Should have posted this here, got carried away by the other thread. Anyway: Gareth ainsworth? Another guy in the same job now for longer than average and has brought Wycombe on from L2 very nicely indeed. Looks ancient but he’s mid forties. McLaren could FO as soon as his amiable chatty style, flashy smile and ‘I learnt from sir Alex don’t u know’ fails to get results. He might need money which I think he had at boro. He was at his best abroad. I fear Mowbray, my cat could manage Celtic to the title and other than that I don’t see a guy To take us forward the way we’d like the club to go. It’s really hard; carvajal looked out of his depth at this level got sacked then completely resurrects a failing side at the next level up! I think who ever gets it it either clicks and we all seem to be pulling in the same direction or it don’t and it’d all be over as soon as we’re stuck around the drop zone again. But if ME plays his cards right and if we get lucky we could be on our way at last...
I am with weighty and nuggs on this, i would want a relatively unknown, young up and coming manager, pref foreign. Steijn would be great but i would love to se Rueser here, not much experience but you have to start somewhere and i think he would bring a great feeling around the place again. Fans would give him time, i am certain of that!
Ainsworth is not a bad shout. He fits the profile of a young, hungry, up and coming manager. His Wycombe side does play a direct style of football though, which we could do with having a break from. I guess the advantage of bringing in someone like Ainsworth or the Cowley brothers is that the existing side would arguably be more comfortable playing that type of football. I don't have any problems with direct football if it produces results and performances, like in 2014/15. I feel the wider fanbase are generally expecting more entertainment.
The more I think about rueser the more I like it; he’s clearly keen on management and has strong links to the club and an idea of the identity we want to return to. Being untried he’ll either be an uwe rosler or the next pochetino!
I like alot of the names being sounded out bar Reuser and Butcher. I think we need a manager who has really earned their place to be a manager at this level and done some hard yards the likes of Danny Cowley, Nathan Jones, Paul Hurst, Maurice Steijn, Paul Tisdale, Paul Cook etc. I've heard Danny Cowley's Lincoln don't play good football, which wouldn't be preferable but in the games they played against us last season they played us off the park both times and were quite positive!! Despite all those names, I'd be quite nervous appointing someone who hasn't had a bit of experience at a bigger club or at this level. I think we could see one of those crumble with small budget and lack of figurehead at the club. I'm warming more towards Mowbray or Wharbuton as both have a reputation for developing young players and playing good football but also they've both had some success and experience at this level
Mogga looks as though he will get promotion with Blackburn which would seem to indicate an upwardly mobile Club, so why would he want to leave there to come to a backward, stagnating Club with a useless, tightfisted, clueless owner ?
I think that Evans might go for Glenn Hoddle type of manager and the obvious choice if that’s the way he goes is to get Glenn Hoddle which I have a feeling we might end up with Glenn Hoddle. I still want Reuser.........he is the Dutch U16 coach so is working with a limited squad with no money to spend so he has to coach to get the best out of what he’s got.....ticks all the boxes
