With respect, I think you missed my point.
I wasn't comparing the ways in which people are killed, I was comparing attitudes.

However, The latest statistics for drink related deaths in the UK is around 9,000 a year. Add to that the number of lives that are ruined by alcohol addiction, both the user, even if they don't die and their nearest and dearest. Binge drinking doesn't just harm the drinker, it is a blot on society and causes many, many visits to A&E which is another cost to the NHS.
The number of gun related deaths in the USA is currently 11,600 for this year to date.

I think that tighter gun laws in the USA could bring that figure down. I also think that our attitude to alcohol in this country also needs to change, which would save the NHS a lot of money and many lives.

Not to challenge the point about attitudes, but, amazingly, there are an estimated 88,000 alcohol-related deaths annually in the USA. Ten times as many as here for 5 times the population.

So many people die annually from gunfire in the US that the death toll between 1968 and 2011 eclipses all wars ever fought by the country. According to research by Politifact, there were about 1.4 million firearm deaths in that period, compared with 1.2 million US deaths in every conflict from the War of Independence to Iraq.

You should see the number for drug, largely synthetic opioid/opioid related, deaths - 65,000 last year, the leading cause of death in the young.

So guns are hardly a problem at all compared to booze and drugs.

Along with Myanmar/Burma it is also the most generous country in the world, in terms of cash and time given by individuals to charitable causes (we are 8th). It also has the second highest average wage in the world (behind Luxembourg) at $60k (we are 15th, at $43k). Just included for contrast.

Sometimes we are misled into thinking we share a common culture as well as a common language.

I’d love to live there (certain cities) for a few years.

I very nearly moved there in the late 90s and always enjoy visiting, but I'm not sure I could put up with their politics for a sustained period.

Funnily enough I can always ignore the politics when I am living abroad. Wish I could say the same about being here.

If you've ever been to the US-Mexico border and the towns, you would understand. Remember, the whole militia thing is still going in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. Believe me, they treat it as if foreign invasion is imminent.

If you have ever been to the "South" where the Blacks all live away from the whites and try to walk through it as a white person, you would understand.

If you've ever been to Chicago lately, you would understand.

I drive my wife mad as I refuse to engage in any politcal discussion with her, all I say to her is to stop worrying Trump will be gone in a little over 3 years.

I live in Manhattan, I haven't own a car since the early 90s, cheaper to rent when needed. My son is 20 and has no interest in getting a driving license.

Emotional response here on the Jimmy Kimmel show...

In the light of actions like this shooting, and numerous others, how anyone can be opposed to tighter gun control in beyond me. Imagine living in a country where, now, anytime you go to an open air concert, the thought that someone could open fire on the crowd will cross your mind. Horrible. That said, it isn't exclusively a US problem. My heart still sinks every now and then when I cycle by the Bataclan. Only difference is the guns are not legal and easy to get here.

    Just all so sad.

Here is another approach to dealing with it:

I think you can get away without a car in Manhattan, or perhaps downtown Chicago and a few other cities with decent public transport, but not in most towns. Its in places like these where Uber has made a real difference.

Quoted on the news here last week ..............." Australia now has twice as many guns in the country than when the Port Arthur shootings, happened.
Moral to the story .............. Only the law biding citizens like myself ( who would rarely go rabbit / roo shooting on farms; bring back the rabbits to cook, etc ) ... who handed in their gun are now without.

People buy over the internet, etc .............. so supposedly, the guns have been flooding into the country.
The internet has brought everything that was too hard to get ( specialist guns ), into reach, which is a real concern.

I must admit, I'm happy to be without my old gun if it means people in general are safer in this country.
I am concerned that with so many guns ( automatics ) flooding into our country, a mass shooting may occur again.
Copycat actions by idiots may come into play.

I looked at the statistics for last year, when there were 11,004 firearms related deaths in the USA (seems to be a big rise this year). Of these 5,500 were suicides. Most of the rest were gang related or domestic. 71 were ‘mass shootings’, of which 49 were in the club in Orlando.

    So far in 2017:

46,805 incidents, of which 273 were 'mass' shootings. 11,716 deaths.

Specifically called out is the fact that suicides by gun are NOT included in their count (there are an average 22,000 gun-related suicides each year by their figures)

Just wait till America wakes up one day in about 15 to 20 years from now when the Hispanic population overtakes the so-called White population, soccer overtakes their sad helmet-protected short-season thing called the NFL (and without realizing, they keep adding more and more soccer teams as we speak hehehehe), the country will have flipped upside down, a new president would rip off the border fence and let all the South Americans in on free visas as the Whites will start running away up North to Canada and try to get Commonwealth citizenship they fought so hard to get away from LOL, so there will be nobody but the South Americans to do all the jobs like cooking and cleaning and deliveries and such (which they all do now, anyways), cities like L.A and Phoenix and Dallas, due to the problem of having no form of proper mass transit that works efficiently that would go everywhere such as the ones in London and Tokyo etc, that are not used by its citizens, will have devolved into a chaotic mess of impossible-to-travel-across-town-in-less-than-3 hours hell (they estimated that in L.A., it would take 17 minutes to go 1 mile by the year 2035), they won't know what hit them. You don't think there'll be more shootings? More people going "Postal" as they call it, flipping out like this?

So why do we give a $hit about America anyway? :emoticon-0102-bigsm Lets worry about London and UK, and may be Europe, shall we? :emoticon-0103-cool:
