Strange about attitudes to this. If a player was close to a ban because of the accumulated disciplinary points racked up and he commits a totally unnecessary bookable offence in the centre circle, then most fans would be less than pleased. Somehow, getting totally needless yellows earlier in the season for a bit of self-indulgent chest-baring seems to be perfectly ok. As it happens, I don't agree with the rule (jumping in the crowd is different) regarding shirts, but until the rules are changed I would expect professional footballers to think what's best for the team, much as I can understand the joy of scoring two goals in one match, having only scored one in the whole of the previous season.
I agree, we don't want players picking up needless cards, could lead to him missing a vital game down the line as you say. Same goes for Clyne against Villa. I can understand their excitement but surely the thought must cross their mind that they will be booked? You do sometimes see players reach for their shirts and then decide against it...
Which is a good point which I hadn't considered. Just after we score the opposition fans will be almost mute, and our fans are in fine voice. Let's get at the opposition whilst they are down! Another good attack shortly after and the atmosphere would be fantastic.
