Night games i used to come from the west end,and weekends it was the northern line from Morden, and walk from Seven sisters
Used to go there as a kid myself. Saturday morning pictures - the 3 stooges. Would be very early seventies
I can remember a particular Saturday morning serial at the Gaumont,Wood Green. It was a certain Brick Bradford.Crazy thing I remember was that he opened a door and came out on the Moon! Really.....! A few years later,I opened a door and came out at White Hart Lane! That was much better!
"we come along on Saturday morning, greeting everybody with a smile" etc etc Remember the rousing song that preceded every Sat morning flicks? How we used to belt that out. I loved it. A good cartoon followed by the 'feature' film, mainly cowboys & Injuns. The cowboys always won! Terrific entertainment, terrific value for sixpence...
I think it was the mums idea to get us out of the house so they could have some peace! But I wouldn't have missed it for the world! Didn't like Roy Rogers, though.I couldn't get use to cowboys chasing cars! But I loved the Durango Kid...and we would come out of the cinema heading towards Turnpike Lane.....and we were riding horses all the way!!!!(People must have thought we were nuts.I guess we were!?)
I agree the Mums enjoyed a couple of hours of peace & quiet! Unlike you though I adored Roy Rogers & Trigger. Thought I'd died & gone to heaven when he came to Haringey and I saw them in the flesh! They were supporting Billy Graham the evangelist but my pals & I went purely to see our favourite cowboy! Good fun evening with lots of singing, Roy sang 'A four legged friend' to Trigger & Billy converting folk left, right & centre.. I do not remember Roy chasing cars though...
I can remember one of my teacher's telling us about him going to see Billy Graham at Harringay Stadium (I think!).He and the science teacher were very religious.I'm afraid I didn't start going to church until much later! I loved the ice hockey at Harringay,by the way! 2,4,6,8 who do we appreciate? who?,the Harringay Racers! (Used at both ice hockey and speedway,of course.)
I used to go see "Dick and Dof" (Fat and Stupid aka Laurel and Hardy) in Munich in 1967 partly to see if Zorro in all his 1920's glory could escape from the fix he was in in the last episode of the serial I'd seen with the last old comedy. He always did, only to get in a new fix at the end of the new one. When we played cowboys and Indians I was always an Indian, and when we played Vietnam War I was always a Vietcong. Glad you enjoyed ice hockey, Big Smithy. A comfort is that I live in the ice hockey capital of the universe. Half the greatest players since Gretzky play or played here: Lemieux, Coffee, Malkin, Crosby... I have no idea why, it's a medium-smallish NHL market...It comes closest to football for being a fun ticket, I think...
I think everyone should see the movie called Slapshot if it ever comes your way.Over the hill or never quite made it ice hockey players.Brilliant movie.....and you'll love the brothers.Reminds me of Leeds United in the 60/70's!!!!!!?
I'm told the version dubbed into French for the Quebecois is even funnier...if you know French, I guess... "I do all the work and you get the glory. You're the Great One and I'm Marty McSorley..." "He had a little money riding on the Maple Leafs," ...my favorite song lyrics referring to hockey went running through my mind...well, walking, or maybe crawling or limping...my thoughts don't usually run...
Have a friend who played along side Gretzky, when he went and played in Canada for a while,he coaches Ice hockey here now
The Canadian national religion has infiltrated northern US cities pretty thoroughly, especially as a youth sport. How could you not want your kid skating around and knocking into other kids?
I've often wondered how the French stayed in Canada after they lost it to Britain. Would the French have let the British stay in Canada if they had won the battle? I don't think so! .....and how come they are allowed to use the French language there in many places? They'll be using Spanish as the main language in the USA in the future...... I suppose Defoe won't have to learn another language, will he?
No,French is only used in Quebec and a small part of Ontario,Ottawa,as it is close to the Quebec boarder, they don't use it in Toronto
Some of the French Acardian speaking population did leave Quebec after the Seven Years war 1763 and settled in Louisiana . Hence part of the creole/Cajun culture.
http://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/apr/18/tim-sherwood-tottenham-hotspur More words of wisdom by our manager.
http://sport.bt.com/sportfootball/football/bale-fee-was-not-enough-sherwood-S11363894402583 This guy needs to shut the hell up.
If by much of a muchness he means distinctly average, then that epithet would be considered a compliment to his managerial abilities.
I can honestly say that I've never disliked a Spurs manager anywhere near as much as I do Sherwood. I can't wait for him to leave.
