I have no problem with away fans being put in the lower tiers, but what killed the atmosphere was Sunderland fans not putting in the effort to get behind the team at home games.. Where the away fans are located should be an irrelevance..
I don't go much these days but have been in certain parts of the ground where singing & chanting are totally frowned upon. One time two fellas told this young lad to "shut the **** up." The east stand & premier concourse are terrible for it. It's just not the done thing in those areas. SW corner used to be great, only ones that made any real effort imo.
I once had a bit of bother during one of our relegation campaigns when someone told me to stop singing.. It took a few lads to pull me back at the time.. I was questioned by stewards at the end of the game where i just said it was nowt.. However, others must have reported what happened and the lad who started it got thrown out before the start of the next home game which just happened to be the mags.. His mates were all pointing at me and accusing me of reporting him, so I walked straight to their seats and said if they wanted bother i would gladly oblige.. at half time one of them came up to me and apologised and said they now know it had nowt to do with me getting him thrown out.. I told him to **** off anyway and couldn't give a **** one way or the other.. happy days eh!!
I got ejected from the ground one time for swearing. It was v Everton, can't remember if you got me the tickets or JJ. It wasn't a tirade of expletives, just a simple "oh ffs! Got reported to a steward & was chucked out. It's a football stadium ffs, not a ****ing church.
I remember one of my mates got ejected for calling Joe Bolton a big nosed bastard when he gave the ball away..
To be fair to the Club, the change was made because we were perceived to be one of the very few Premier League Clubs to allocate prime seats to Away Fans. Behind the goal as a 'Family Area is quite popular, in fact it has usually been sold out on a regular basis. The 'Premier Concourse' (otherwise referred to as The Gods) was rarely anywhere near full.
Used to go there before I started taking No1 Grandson. As you say the atmosphere was great. It reminded me of Roker Park in more ways than one. Everybody was standing. And just like Roker Park every 6 foot 6 sod in the stadium used to stand in front of me.
