I know it's early for the January transfer window tosh but the rumour has it that Ryan's missus has been tweeting about Ryan and Man U and been told to keep quiet beofre she gets into trouble!

Make of that what you will guys.

Man U are dire at the back this season and Rio is getting on. We all know Fergie has first dibs on Ryan and now he has matured to the England squad is this the last of him as a Stokie??

Time will tell I suppose!

I hope it's not true Waddo, but the rumours will surface frequently I suppose over the next few weeks. Should Utd decide to put in a firm bid in January I would imagine ShawX would find it difficult to turn down the chance to return to OT.

As they say, no smoke without fire.. but it's easy enough to create an account for twitter and post anything you wish! Just hope it's not going to happen personally.

Makes you wonder if that is why TP was pushing for Ryan to be an England player to inflate his price tag.

Would be a big loss for us and not much around to replace him.

A big loss Yes! However, if we could get 20 million it would be a good deal all round. Ryan would get the chance to develope as a footballer and further his international career and we could by a 5 million no nonsense defender to hoof the ball!

But Smithers, would we be able to buy a recognised LEFT BACK for part of the money we may get for Ryan?

Stoke City hoping new six-year deal for Ryan Shawcross will ward off Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur
Stoke City have offered Ryan Shawcross a new six-year contract in an attempt to prevent Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur making bids for the defender next year.

Shawcross is in advanced talks over a lucrative long-term deal that will ensure he sees out the peak years of his career at the Britannia Stadium, with manager Tony Pulis hopeful of ending the uncertainty over his future in the next few weeks.

Stoke have stepped up negotiations after Shawcross was called up into Roy Hodgson's England squad for the World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Poland last month and further talks are expected within the next fortnight. The 25 year-old has just over 18 months left on his current contract but Pulis is keen for Stoke to agree a deal as a number of Premier League clubs are believed to be monitoring the defender's situation.

United sold Shawcross to Stoke for an initial £1 million in 2008 but still have a buy-back option which allows them first refusal if any rival clubs make a bid. Sir Alex Ferguson has made no secret of the fact that he regretted selling the former Old Trafford trainee and could move to bring him back in the summer, with doubts over the long-term fitness of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

Shawcross joined United as a 15 year-old and made only two appearances in the League Cup but Ferguson is known to have been keeping a close eye on his progress. In his programme notes before United's game against Stoke last month, he wrote: "I was delighted to see him called up for the England squad because he is a quality player I have wished – particularly of late – was still at Old Trafford.

"The problem was that at the time of his release we had an especially strong group of young centre-halves and it was becoming impossible to give them all games at the level their progress warranted. We had Jonny Evans, Gerard Piqué, Ryan Shawcross, Craig Cathcart, and Paul McShane, and something had to give. We made the right decision keeping Jonny Evans but I'm not so sure about letting Shawcross join Stoke."

Guys IMO it's inevitable, it's going to happen sooner rather than later.

This keeps popping up. There's no way of telling what will happen, but what gets me is that some people still insist Shawcross is a talentless thug, yet Utd are allegedly interested. . .

Re the comments about Ryan are from Goonies. No surprise there then. I'm sure Utd fans (should the worst happen) would realise how good he is. And support the lad. Just hope he signs another contract ASAP.

You would hope so, but I think we sometimes forget that the lack of fullbacks is deliberate not a mistake!
