I'm not questioning the ability of the players he has at Bayern, I'm just saying the possession game isn't how to win Champions Leagues with them, where as at Barca it was as that is there philosophy right down to there academy. Jupp Heynckes's more aggressive attacking system suited Bayern better, as they could use there size and power to give them an edge over the likes of Barca. Playing Barcas style against them just plays into there hands, hence what happened last season
So what you're saying is that when he had little experience of managing the first team he did rather well when he finally had the step up to managing the first team. AND after gaining experience managing a first team... it proved irrelevant when he went to manage Bayern. And to top it off, his possession football doesnt suit leagues like Germany or England. All in all 3 very good arguments why Giggs should be fine.
Maybe. Van gaals style did take them one game off a treble, losing only to a bus managed by Jose (also beat Barcelona that year). Heynckes team added a counter attacking element, which was ultimately the difference for them. German football changed massively in the early 2000s. They decided to start from the ground up and revamped coaching across the board which has been paying off for then in recent years too.
I didn't say anything about Giggs. Pep Guardiolas first time success with a top club is very rare. The difference with us, is we don't have a set philosophy like Barca do, even under Fergie we used to change our style and system depending on the personnel we had, and who we where playing. it doesn't really take much skill managing Barca, as the players already know what the tactics are as they've been playing the same way since they where kids
Uir, yes it is possible that van Gaal could stay but he's said he's leaving at the end of next season so discussions are based on that. The suggestion the new manager will be told he has to play the same style as him is utter nonsense though. No manager on earth would take a job under those circumstances.
I think you've misunderstood me somewhat. I don't mean identical but someone who follows on in a similar way. Like Pep has at Bayern. Itbmakes sense to get someone who doesn't need to overhaul everything again, otherwise you literally end up like Liverpool, who have been in transition for decades hiring different types of manager every time. It simply doesn't work.
Liverpool never think about their appointments. Each has a very different style to the last and thus requires a period of learning and adaptation. I believe the club has thought about this and decided this is the direction we are going in. The first choice would have been Pep, but he had already agreed with Bayern so we looked around for someone similar with the same kind of philosophy. Naturally that's van Gaal. Their styles are not identical but share many traits. Pep is a self admitted pupil of van Gaals style and admired his Ajax team (considers then the most perfect and complete side ever). He's adapted his own way around it and this, for me, is the natural successor. Maybe Giggs should remains as assistant beyond van Gaal and then learn under Pep, if we go down that road.
Which surely means Giggs is a feasible option, given he will have worked under van Gaal for three years. The likes of Ancelotti, Klopp, Mourinho will very definitely have their own distinct ideas. This idea points to Giggs or Guardiola. Bringing in the likes of Conte, Simeone or Blanc does not at all lead to continuity for example.
Fair point really. Giggs will certainly be learning under van Gaal. Most do and some go on to be highly successful. I don't believe giggs is unhappy under van Gaal for one thing and that he is learning all the time. Perhaps you are right. However, I would prefer van Gaal, Pep then maybe Giggs after. Wouldn't mind that at all. You would think by then, Giggs would have a wealth of knowledge from 3 of the games best managers.
On Klopp, I am surprised he gets mentioned. For me he needs to re establish himself. I have little doubt that he will but for me, he's not even a candidate (not only due to his style). I think he knows this himself as well. He had a mare with Dortmund. We can make excuses for him and dome are very much valid, but to fall away do badly, no other manager would be free from criticism like Klopp has.
I think Giggs would keep the style we are playing. There is nothing wrong with playing possession football, it's what you do with that possession that counts. I believe over the next few weeks we will begin to become more adventurous, don't forget we are bedding five new players into the system again (like last year) but have started much better and just need to speed the game up. If Giggs does take over it should be a smooth handover by the time LvG goes.
Fully agree regarding our play. The last two games have given a glimpse into what's yo come. The sideways passing will continue but with an end result. We've got a real gem in Memphis upfront. Yes he's struggled in the league so far but hes showed us in Europe that he's got something we've been missing. His goal v PSV was again, a joy to behold. I've missed us scoring goals like that and we've had 3 in recent times. Martial too helps with this change of emphasis. I would hope Giggs does continue the style yet mixes it up with his own. Throw elements of Fergie in and he could be some manager. I would still be patient though. We are a long way of perfecting this sort of football and have a lot to learn. Someone said (chief maybe) that we are good in the first two stages (def and mid) but go to **** in attack. We are by no means a bad team and we basically have it sussed right up until the killer ball. That's what's lacking. Done right possession football can be an absolute joy. We are by no means masters yet.
Is the reason we are strong in defence and midfield yet poor in attack, because of the way we play. Is it because we aren't taking enough risks in games to actually win them. I remember last season we had far to many draws. It's tricky to get the balance right, but Fergies way of throwing the kitchen sink at the opposition if the game was still level usually paid off. Even Mourinho who parks the bus all the time, will take big risks late on in a game to turn 1 point into 3. To win the league I don't think you can afford to ever settle for draws
Bit of both I would say, although the main reason is the speed at which we play. If you go forward too slow then the opposition get 7/8 players in the box making it almost impossible to play a killer ball, in that situation you need people who are prepared to take a shot from outside the area which we have lacked for the last few years. On the bright side, at the back end of last season and the beginning of this, I have noticed players like Herrera, Blind, Basti and Memphis are now starting to shoot from distance and it has brought a few goals.
IMO LVG was appointed only for one reason: get the club back into CL. This was the first and last objective. He himself admitted that. Style was secondary. Getting CL also meant the arrest in the slide towards mid table which is inconceivable for a club of that size. But as past and recent history indicates with the chavs sliding, it is much more difficult than young fans can ever imagine. Giggs is learning but I just don't think he is ready to manage the likes of internationals like Bastian and Rooney and youngsters like martial and shaw. They all need different skills from the manager. I would prefer him to learn and make mistakes in other clubs. When you are inexperienced the only person you'll turn to is the guy you've worked with last ie LVG. I see LVG doing a job but he simply cannot take us to that next stage. That is exciting football which will also win trophies. At our stage that's fine but once we are established as a top 4 (which we haven't btw) then we can push on. For me, ancelotti pep klopp should be the targets but giggs could come back at a later stage. The ex players like Robson, Bruce Ince haven't been great successes have they? Hughes could be good but his stint with City may put the club off.
Werent we saying this 8 months ago, but the excuse then was he was working with an inferior squad and everything would change with our new summer signings. The things Van Gaal says after every match seems to suggest everything we do on the pitch is how he wants.
Not so much an inferior but a broken squad. One still suffering from the effects of the previous disaster. Have you missed the bit in almost every presser when van Gaal states how we lack cutting edge and are too slow. I know you think he's an idiot but he's not blind. Hopefully the signings he made will help solve that issue, they've already given us far more pace in attack which is evident in the last few games.
