its called the 'murder' gene. The same gene exists in psychopaths and succesful sportsmen and enterpreneaurs like Steve Jobs.

Its like the sportsman pushes his ability to such a perverse level that he becomes a freak of nature a genius in his sport or you push whatever pursuit you are obsessed with to its perverse level.

i dunno...heard an explanation similar to that once whilst watching one of these programmes

I watch a lot of ID Discovery and Crime Investigation, the Bundy story is fascinating in its gory way but he was a very clever individual, as was the Golden State killer.

Simon Cowell is a serial killer too, he's been killing the music industry for ****ing years now, the square headed butt plug.. :)

Whatever their IQ or genes, the common theme seems to be something in their childhood, usually as a result of parenting or lack of - particularly an overwhelming experience of rejection or abuse, that triggers them into going down this path.

Lack of empathy, unable to see human feelings, emotions from a 3rd person prospective another trait.

Experimenting on animals is a tell, but not always.

Thing to consider between many who may have dangerous thoughts but don't follow through with them, whilst serial killers do... they don't start off that way initially. Quite often they start with smaller violent crimes e.g. mugging, rape etc and then "progress" to killing.

Then as they continue to kill they get sloppy, I've read because subconsciously they want to get caught.

The problem for many of them is that they’re finally acting out a fantasy. Something that’s been inside for some time, but they’ve never acted on before.

The initial high of finally acting out their fantasy soon fades. Then they need to do it again to feel thst samerush. However, like any junkie, the High begins to fade. So me they need a bigger rush to try and get that high back. This can lead to increased number of attacks, which entails taking more and bigger risks, getting careless, etc.

It’s no surprise that they virtually all get caught eventually.,

BTK is one of the more ridiculous ones, because he built up such a fearsome reputation, then got caught because he's a ****ing moron! <laugh>
Went silent for years, resurfaced because some journalist was writing about him, then asked the police if a disk was untraceable and they lied to him.
Turned out that he was a cub scout leader and church council president when he wasn't torturing and killing people.

The Golden State Killer and his various escalations through other nicknames and habits was crazy.
Really surprised that they finally caught him.

He would have lasted 5 minutes with modern technology.

He was an opportunist. No thought or planning

Not sure that he counts as a serial killer though, as he didn't actually kill anyone.

Yeh completely. The risks he took were ridiculous. But another skilled killer. Either a physician or a butcher gauging by the way he dissected his victims.

Jeffrey Dahmer is probably my favourite. Loads of freezers, rituals and cannabilism. What a guy.

The Green River killer was one of the longest lasting and most prolific.

Confirmed 49 murders. Although confessed to over 70.
