"Rooney has only scored six goals in major tournaments - four times at Euro 2004, once at Euro 2012 and once at the 2014 World Cup. However, only 12 of his goals have come in friendly matches"

6 goals when it actually matter then.
32 goals in qualifying, how many against San Marino or Andorra or Liechtenstein and the like?

    Love it.

More goals that "mattered" than any England player apart from Lineker.

    Just the facts.

So scoring say the 5th, 6th or 7th goal against San Marino really matters? Rather than scoring say the winning goal in a World Cup QF?

The only goals that mattered to England were in 1966 Shtan, the rest have led to abject failure.

    Fact.

Second most Tournament goals not qualifying goals.

    Just the facts.

Don't disagree so we'll have to put Hurst up there as England's greatest ever striker. Fine by me. I'd still say Sir Bobby is England's greatest ever player but others will disagree. Perhaps you'd go for Phil Neal.

More of a club than international man meself personally, although they played in different positions for club and country in different eras but have roughly the same amount of hair these days Im glad we(LFC)had Neal in our defence rather than Charlton in midfield/up front, we had an abundance of good players in those areas during Neal's time at the club.

    As for England, who cares.

  8. You can even ignore who they were scored against and just look at the games to goals ratio...

    According to ITV on Friday

    Charlton 106 games 49 goals
    Rooney 106 games 49 goals

  12. Just checked Wiki and it's the same. However...

    Lineker = 80 games 48 goals

Charlton / Rooney = 0.46 goals per game
Lineker = 0.6 goals per game

I could be wrong but didn't Charlton play some games in a deeper position too?

Completely missed the England game, didn't even know they were playing today.

    Mission accomplished @InBiscanWeTrust <cheers>

I see the useless sack of **** scored a meaningless penalty for his record. Very fitting.

Rooney hasn't shown up at the actual Euros or Worlds since he first came on the international scene

Yep, he dropped deeper quite often.

Lineker and Beardsly were a fantastic partnership for England, we should have done a lot better in that time.

Have you ever thought he might have needed a team around him?

Loads of Rooney's goals have also come against new countries that didn't even exist even as not that long ago as the 80s

  18. Beardsley and any striker worked, he was that bloody good. An shambles that Souness should him when he did. to give the reason that he was getting on a bit too <doh> Same for Dalglish.

Sheringham was very similar in that regard too but obviously not as good as the other two mentioned ;).

Nah don't buy that, poor excuse, true individual talent shows itself even in adverse situations

His record should be broken with ease then since these countries will exist for the foreseeable future <ok>
