Greatness is a very large accolade and one that Rooney is yet to prove and Lampard falls well short of.

No it's not! Greatness is an accolade that is confered upon truly iconic players. As far as Rooney is concerned he does have the opportunity to reach that status at United and join their other iconic players Law, Charlton, Best, etc. I do not believe that Lampard will ever be considered as such at Chelsea.

 

Watch that from every angle and you'll see that it is the refs whistle hanging off his wrist that hits tevez and gets him to turn.

Lampard has come runner up in the WPOTY and Ballon D'Or, and won numerous other awards. He's also Chelsea's third highest ever scorer. I think it'd pretty churlish to say Lampard hasn't been a great player, but then I guess it depends on your definition of greatness and how exclusive you make it. Either way, his goals, trophies and achievements make him one of Chelsea's greatest ever players imo, and I don't even rate him as highly as Scholes or Gerrard.

Rooney probably does need to perform at the top level for a few more seasons in order to be seen as a great player. But then by the end of this season he may already have scored more than Best, and could well end his career as Utd's highest ever goalscorer. Personally I think he's already knocking on the door of the top 10 Utd players of all time, and in a few seasons will break into those ranks.

I suppose you're right RHC. That sort of accolade is overshadowed by getting banned for seven games for needlessly biting and opponent.
