That was my thought at the time with Tim/Ruben on the Abu situation. Only difference was Ruben was well intentioned with it and Tim’s castigating of Jarvis/Burstow felt like an outburst of frustration. Far as I understand it Tim nearly resigned after Reading in pre-season.
I didn’t support Selles treatment of Kamara - but it also can’t be ignored that Kamara had a number of decent games under Selles so it’s not like they fell out. We didn’t fall over the line. We stayed up because we got 49 points and Selles created the best defence outside the top 3 in his time here. We shouldn’t boil down his tenure to one weekend.
Yeah Walter had a history of being a massive **** to players so him doing it wouldn't have been viewed in the same manner. Selles also explained quite clearly what he was trying to achieve. What's more likely is Walter would have thrown Kamara in the u21s for a few weeks or shunned him completely. Look at how Walter treated Kamara on his debut ffs. Is that true about Tim? What a bedwetter.
For me at least, it's not about whether Selles is the right man for the job next season or not, it represents another season of turmoil and disruption. If it's anything like last year, it'll rumble on, players will leave, we'll drag our heals bringing in replacement, we'll hear excuses about players not being up to speed by the time the season starts and before you know it it's Christmas again. Unless Acun has finally found the Brain in his Brain Team, it won't matter who replaces Selles because they won't have the tools to do any better job.
That’s what I heard at the time from someone who would probably know. Couldn’t quite believe it at the time but since Baz said they had to re-record his club interview at least twice after the Reading game due to it being filled with expletives maybe there was something to it.
Pretty much my feelings too. Any good manager will do a decent job if we provide the tools and conditions. We consistently don't. The stuff discussed above regarding Tims frustration and alleged resignation after Reading is a reflection of these issues too. Another problem I was considering too is that IF, there are players considered bad eggs, whether thats through behaviours, characteristics or just that they're not good enough. They probably survive another window, as a new manager will likely give everyone a chance. Selles probably had an idea of who he thought should be moved on.
Actually I think it’s the opposite. Get a proper manager in now and finally have some stability. If we kept Selles on just because and end up sacking him by January because we’re still ****, that’s another season of turmoil pissed away. Big question marks over Selles ability to get a team playing at this level. Why not take the safer option and find someone who can now? Assuming he does make a solid appointment of course.
I also disagree with the notion that Selles didn’t have the tools to do a good job. He had a solid squad of players available to him regardless of injuries. He just couldn’t get the best out of them.
So after every transfer window we are said to have done good business, pulled a few rabbits out of hats, a mix of potential and experience. And then when a manager gets the sack one of the reasons is because he didn't have the tools to do a better job. I would say all the managers Acun has used have underperformed, compared to those teams around us and money spent. Not the only mistake he has made but the first was getting rid of McCann for his mate Shota.
Probably because two of the players that attracted the most praise - Barry and Matazo - got injured, and the third people were excited about, Gelhardt, did end up being quite good. People were a bit confused on Lincoln, Amrabat and Joseph and none of them did much.
Walter was visibly frustrated with the recruitment process all pre-season. He then unfairly took that frustration out on the players already at the club and those we eventually signed. That poor man-management is on him and he could’ve and should’ve done much better to build a bond with the players but I do still sympathise with the situation he was put in and he must have been incredibly frustrated with the club hierarchy to consider quitting before the first game of the season. The players were miserable under Walter and morale was lower than a snake’s belly by the time he was sacked. Sellés came in, built a good relationship with the squad quickly and improve morale significantly and whilst inconsistent, the players looked up for it and we got some good results. Then the form and morale dropped off a cliff again after the March international break, for reasons that remain a mystery…
Straight question... if we had both finished on 49 points but had lost out on goal difference to Luton, what would the Selles in crews response be.
