Plymouth is another big City (with a massive catchment area) that has always seriously underachieved, no wonder Greeny is such a bitter Janner..... Bristol is big too, but they have the two clubs there of course
Greeny Yeah but a quick look shows Sheffield at having a couple hundred thousand smaller population than Leeds yet has two clubs get only 4-6k less each. Pretty impressive really.
Anyway... Like I said in total top flight seasons this is our 40th which makes us 27th in the country. Do people think the blue few are above or below? Anyone reckon they could name the top 6 in order? First should be easy.
Arsenal for sure and Everton have been in the top division since the 30s I think. Then.. Man U Spuds Liverpool And probably someone silly like an old club like Preston or Blackburn
Everton top, believe it or not, with 116! Villa 105 Liverpool 104 Arsenal 102 Man Utd 94 Man City 90 Saints 27th with 40 Pompey 29th with 33 Consecutive seasons of those currently in PL: Arsenal 93 Everton 65 Liverpool 57 Man Utd 44 Spurs 41 Chelsea 30 Man City 17 Saints 7 West Ham 7 Interestingly, Arsenal have never been promoted to the top division, but were elected in 1919-20, and have remained ever since. Sadly I can’t find any stats of consecutive seasons which aren’t just about the PL, so Saints 27 years between 1977 and 2005 will have to stand as a record on its own!
Cardiff should have the one of the biggest followings in British football but for some reason don’t. Swansea had their couple of good seasons, but Cardiff have and always will be the boss team in Wales.A nation more into Rugby than football plays its part I guess.
Right off the top of my head, no cheating; Arsenal Liverpool Man Utd Everton Tottenham Newcastle Edit; did not see Chilco’s post before writing this
IMHO we are being stitched right up by the current owner and his cronies . Relegation is inevitable , but we will bonce back eventually .
I seem to recall a very dodgy Everton game, must be in the 90’s. Last game of the season and 2-0 at half time down v Wimbledon I think. If they lost I think they would be auto relegated. They won weirdly and I was amazed that game was never investigated.
The only time they were seriously in danger of relegation from the PL was in 1997-98, when they drew 1-1 at home to Coventry on the last day. That was the last season we won at Goodson, 2-0.
Don't blame you to be honest, winning and playing well is fun. I'm sure many of my fellow Saints fans favourite seasons have been the League 1 and Championship promotion seasons riding the crest of a wave. We have had some fantastic seasons back in the prem too, but eventually this league stamps on any team that challenges the hierachy. You need rich owners willing to put money in, management with a plan, and some luck.
i remember the win, didn't Kevin Davis score? will have to check the tables... Edit: Was 93/94 they were two down and won 3-2. The draw would send them down. Shef U went down but sure there was some well dodgy stuff going on
Sheff Utd were involved in that controversy about ten tears ago with the Spammers when they went down and Tevez and Mascherano were playing illegally supposedly. Unlucky club I suppose.
7-14th is a very realistic goal based on size, £ revenue & having good - excellent owners & senior management. Present capabilities - bottom 6 (hopefully, top of). Our size & £ revenue hasn’t really changed ........... something else must have gone amiss
