I've always opted out of collective bargaining, preferring to sort my own situation out, and I've always fared better. No reason why the UK can't do the same.
You're also relying on a negotiator who could well be involved in other discussions, so the issue at hand could be used as a compromise for other negotiations. They could also be someone of limited ability, because the ones that are any good tend to get decent jobs to take them out of the equation.
