Season compass 2021-22

PL (like for like with 2020-21 after 13 games) : Pts = 6, GF = -8, GA = +1.

Brentford paired with Sheffield United on the like for like.

 

PL (like for like with 2020-21 after 14 games) : Pts = 8, GF = -6, GA = 0.

Norwich paired with Fulham on the like for like.

 

PL (like for like with 2020-21 after 15 games) : Pts = 9, GF = -4, GA = +1.

 

PL (like for like with 2020-21 after 16 games) : Pts = 9, GF = -5, GA = 0.

 

PL (like for like with 2020-21 after 17 games) : Pts = 7, GF = -9, GA = -1.

 

So the halfway point (2 postponed games to play - but Spurs
will have to win them to maintain the "like for like" ) ...


- PL

7 pts ahead, but the GF is appalling.
Looking at the due fixtures on the like for like, and it will be far worse.

If Spurs are to take 4th place, it will have to be on pts alone
and probably the worst GD seen for 4th place in recent times.

Instinct tells me that already such a poor GF will ultimately
translate into a pts total not much better than last season.

We do not even have Kane + Son running riot like they were
last season, regardless of the overall meh level of the team.


- League cup

Done what was required in order to reach the SFs.


- UEFA land

An absolute eff-up. Embarrassing. Unprofessional. You name it.
Treating the ECL as a joke tournament is one thing, but with
19 ranking pts to be lost on the 5 yr rolling window, tis utterly
unprofessional to exit the tournament with only 5 pts.

This ranks up there with Arry and the 2011-12 EL campaign
(and we know how that ultimately went as far as a CL slot goes) .


- Managers

Nuno was never up to the task.

Conte is showing some nous in his attempts to rotate the squad
at this point in the season, together with his formations.

There is little beyond the best starting possible starting XI,
and I doubt there will be incoming signings who will make
the difference for the 2nd half of the season.

To finish PL 4th will require a Fergie-esque act of sheer
iron will over the squad from Conte.

January is a key month now for Spurs in the PL,
with the opportunity to get stuck into both the Goons,
and Chelsky (who are going thru a bit of a rut at the moment) ,

 

PL (like for like with 2020-21 after 19 games) : Pts = 7, GF = -10, GA = -1.

 

Here is the season compass PL breakdown for the rest of the season
(pts needed / extra points available) :

- 1st half (postponed games) : 6 / 3

- 2nd half : 27 / 21


I believe that the postponed games will yield at least 6 pts.

There is plenty of scope for improvement in the 2nd half,
if Conte can do his work on the formations played and the
player mindsets.

 

PL (like for like with 2020-21 after 20 games) : Pts = 6, GF = -10, GA = +1.

With the pts as above, here again is the end for Nuno : Pts = 6, GF = -3, GA = +2.

 

So Nuno improved on Mourinho by 6 points in 10 games but scored fewer goals whereas Conte is doing exactly as well as Mourinho on points and scoring a lot fewer goals. Goals conceded about the same all round.
Goal difference is probably a better indicator of long term form than points which suggests Conte is actually doing worse than Nuno!

 

1. Conte is doing at least as badly on attack as Nuno
(I doubt the latter would have even been close to
maintaining the GA on the "like for like" ) .

2. GD is not an indicator of form.

A GD in the 30s is however a high predictive trait
of teams that finish PL top 4.

 

We may not be scoring any more under Conte, but we're creating a lot more chances.
I think he's had some horrible games already, making a bunch of mistakes.
Can't really blame him for our forwards failing to put the ball in the net, though. Or **** officials.

 

As I recently predicted, if Spurs finish PL top 4 this season,
it will likely be with the lowest GD ever (for whatever placing that may be) .

 

That's all true. Fortunately if we get exactly the same number of points in the second half of the season as we got from the first 19 matches we would have 72 points which should be enough for top 4.

 

Transfer window closed. On the basis of the above, do people believe that :

- the squad as is, is now potent/resilient enough
- Conte is sufficiently adept to drive the squad

to finish the PL season with at least 72 pts ??
