Firmino left old Trafford on crutches today, apparently. Depending on the severity of course, they could well be without him.
Liverpool away on Mother's Day. Aww, that's nice. Or Mother****ers Day as some of us will be calling it as Cardiff play Chelsea too
PL (like for like with 2017-18 after 29 games) : Pts +2, GF +1, GA -1. A (possibly fatal) collapse over 3 consecutive games.
Spurs into the CL QFs. The issue is we have never been this far into the CL and also qualified for next season via a PL top 4 slot. We will know a lot more about the PL run-in for current 3rd - 6th after the result of the Man Utd CL tie tonight.
Errm, yes we have, back in 2011 The good news is there's no chance of meeting the team that knocked us out at that stage (and also caused me to swear VERY loudly in a Tokyo bar in the middle of the afternoon...)
Exited the CL at the QFs. Finished 5th in the PL. Therefore EL in 2011-12. Perhaps dealing with both competitions now in the presence of squad injuries will not be a repeat of 2011 (Bale in particular, the general wounded that led to the heroic starting XI fielded against AC Milan at the San Siro) .
The PL run-in for current 3rd - 6th ... The number of 'six pointer' games remaining between the top 6 : Goons : 1. Chelsky, Spurs : 2 Man Utd : 3. The Goons and Chelsky will probably reach the EL QFs without feeling the effects of the extra two games, so all the clubs will have the same UEFA commitments. Spurs IMHO have the worst of it (more so if we get a tough CL draw) .
PL (like for like with 2017-18 after 30 games) : Pts +1, GF +1, GA 0. The danger is very real now (feels like a combo of 2011 and 2012) .
We only need 2 of the group of teams who finished below us last year to improve significantly for the pressure to be on this year. And in Arsenal and Liverpool, we have precisely that. City's points tally last year was ridiculous and so far ahead of ours comparisons are pointless. The gaps between us and Arsenal & Liverpool have respectively shrunk drastically and reversed entirely.
Place your bets, which of their players picks up a cheap booking in the first leg assuming an easy ride to the semis, only to look about as clever as Sergio Ramos when the second leg's finished?
IMHO things are now akin to exactly 9 yrs ago, but with the pressure of finishing the season as CL qualifiers (due to new WHL) as a must rather than a "would be a bonus" . I look at the on-pitch staff, and I see nobody with any significant material consequences for effing up the above. Compound that (for some players) with the mindset of no obligation to the club (to put in an number of 110% efforts to do what it takes) , and we know how it will pan out.
