I went, and was very impressed by both men. Holden has a sharp wit, great emotional intelligence and footballing insight. A breath of fresh air, and very good evening apart from the bar being too busy to get a beer.
Holden is shaping up to be our best gaffer since Lee Bowyer. Very early days, but we might not be quite as hopelessly rudderless now...
In a nutshell, I think as a rule any team needs three things in order to have a solid chance for promotion and long term improvement. A good manager. A savvy owner who installs a capable senior management team. Some well spent investment. At present we have one of those things (the least difficult to come by of the three, and the most transient). It's true that a brilliant manager like Lennie Lawrence can achieve promotion against all odds. Or a decent gaffer like Bowyer can win a promotion with some team investment but no other support from a disinterested owner. But turning that promotion into longer term better times for the Club is impossible without all three ingredients. CAFC are very unlikely to have all three of the ingredients for the foreseeable future. So we're in the 3rd tier to stay - and that's the optimistic outlook.
I hear the Valley pitch was looking less than perfect today Somebody ought to tell the Landlord. Surely adequate pitch maintenance is a condition of our tenancy agreement. Come on Roland, give TS a kick up the arse...
Our season (and last season) have been the most lifeless in decades. Surely not since the early 1970's have we been this poor. I could bear it if TS was genuinely building something better, even gradually. But he's been as useless as Roland.
Never thought I'd see the day when I'd agree with this statement! The road to Hell is paved with good intentions, as Tommy is discovering.
