derbies frequently occur on bank holidays to maximise crowds. people are often not at work on bank holidays, not just trawlermen.

tell us when hull city played grimsby on christmas day.

He's got that the wrong way round anyway, we were actually exempt from having to play games on Christmas Day.

So, in answer to x's question, we've never played Grimsby on Christmas Day.

My Grandfather was a skipper also, but was lost with all hands when his trawler actually hit a mine whilst acting as a minesweeper in the Dogger Bank area around 1920/21. There are not many families in our region that have not got similar tales to tell.

Many years ago I went to see Northern Trawl at the old Spring St. What a great play and pulled on the old heart strings too.

I remember Skipper Lewis of the Lord Nelson. He won the Silver Cod trophy several times I think. I went to school with his son, John. The rich swine lived on Heads Lane. They didn't all live in Kirkella.

And for those interested in genealogy, Woodgates Maternity home in Ferriby was built (in art deco style) for a trawler owner and taken over by the Atlee government. I wonder how many Three Day Millionaires came to the world there? I am told I entered the world at Woodgates ... but I don't believe it.

Though ourselves and Grimsby were exempt we did play games on Christmas Day quite a few times.

RH always get it wrong stating ourselves and Grimsby were allowed to play on Christmas Day. Wasn't the reason for the exemption that the landing of the fish in Hull and Grimsby was so important that if the arrival or departure of the fishing fleet were to be affected permission was given for the teams not to play as so many people were involved in fishing it would have affected the crowds?
