Off to Bamburgh castle tomorrow and getting fish and chips in Seahouses for lunch, can anyone recommend a particular chippy?

We don't get many takeaways and it doesn't get much better than a good chippy so I want to make it count haha.
 
Used to be called the Viking but that was decades ago.
Recommend the crab sarnies from the pub in Craster though, not too far away

The best chippy up there is in Alnwick high street on the left hand side, bit of a detour but we always end up there on our way home, the chippys in Seahouses vary a lot imo. The trip out to the Farne Islands is great when the boats are not overcrowded, a real treat. Hope you enjoy the coastline its amazing, the walk south along the beach on a summer evening from Low Newton until you reach the view of Dunstanburgh Castle is another treat, if you have the time.

Stop off at the Olde Ship Inne, Nacho. Nice little booze and beer garden overlooking the harbour.

I remember two fish and chip shops in the high street, directly opposite each other mr the car park and ‘tat’ shops/arcades. Nee idea what they’re called, but i’ve never had complaints whennthere... once every five years!!

Most chip shops all taste the same nowadays. They have lost their identity by getting the same ingredients from the same suppliers.

Googled it before and apparently two of the good ones are Pinnacle and Neptunes, dunno if either of those are the ones you mentioned. Usually I'd look at how busy a restaurant is if you don't have a clue otherwise but there's two chippies in my town, one is bang average and the other one is always heaving and literally twice the price but the four times I've been it's been utter ****e. Can't cook a chip.

Cheers for the tip about the pub I'll pop in for a pint.
 
Neptunes is the main one in the centre where most go and that's decent enough, always rammed especially at weekends at this time of year.

I'd recommend going North past the Castle a bit and then A walk along the Bamburg beach is brilliant if the tide is out - it's huge and a real sight of the castle.

Also, I’m reading the same series of books I think and they’re great.

Enjoy it, it really is a lovely place.
 
Giacc’s reminded me - Neptune’s - was the one I was disappointed with . Not awful , just when you’re looking for top notch , anything less leaves you feeling short

I’ve never had a bad experience to be fair and been quite a bit when younger with parents etc. Not the best I’ve ever had but certainly by no means the worst.

Nowt better than a decent fish chips and curry sauce with **** loads of salt and vinegar.

Come to Australia mate. Kills me to say it but there fish and chips beat ours by a distance.

No cod or haddock. They sell flake which is ****ing gummy shark. Beautiful meat. ****ing bastard did us.

It's always a disappointing when you've been looking forward to something only to find that it's gone down to average, at best.

I used to reckon that the country's best fish and chip I'd found could be had in,
Seahouses,
Robin Hoods Bay
Ullapool

An obvious reason USED to be that they all got their fish straight from the boats.
Last time I got any from Seahouses it was no different from anywhere else.
The earlier comment about all the shops using similar suppliers seems right.
Or, perhaps my old worn out taste buds are to blame.

To be honest though, after a boat trip round the Islands , the fresh air and a pint or two, even average fish and chips tastes good.

If all else fails mate there is a cafe/restaurant within the grounds of Bamburgh Castle....worked for me just to fill a hole until you find something else. Enjoy your day...
 
The problem with British fish and chips is that many local places don’t use the local catch. It’s cheaper to bring in frozen fish , en-masse. Some local fisherman can prohibited / at least restricted from selling their daily catch locally, too.

A sad reality for many British seaside towns..

Good point.

Take as a 'rule of thumb' that if they try to be all things to all men, the probability is that they will fail on all counts.
