Very interesting Sea The Stars horse set to debut later in the week. MUNJAZ is trained by old boy Gosden and has been entered in maidens and Newbury and Newmarket on Friday. However, the really eyecatching entry re him is in a Listed race, across the county line, the following day. Old boy Gosden isn’t one to ‘call his geese, swans’ and so Munjaz must have been showing something to warrant such an entry. Like Radiator, a few weeks back, I’m always intrigued by horses whom leading trainers opt to possibly pitch so high first time out. Munjaz’s long term entries are the ‘Royal Lodge’ and the old Derby. Is also nicely bred as the dam is a half sister to 1,000 Guineas victor, Virginia Water.
Looks highly, highly likely that Munjaz won’t be making his bow in Listed company as old boy Gosden has declared him to run at Newmarket on Friday eve (6.30). He’s one of Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s so Paul Hanaghan will ride. This is the same heat that 3 years ago old boy Gosden debuted Nathaniel in. And he was edged out of it on that occasion by a horse called Frankel, I say Frankel.
Friday's maiden is certainly a hot race and always throws up a decent horse or two, though this year's group havea lot to live up to if they are to emulate the 3 G1 horses from the 2010 running!
MY TITANIA runs at Leopardstown tonight. She is the first STS runner in the ownership of the Tsui's and trained by John Oxx. She also holds an entry for the G1 Moyglare Stakes next month.

Laying all Sea The Star's 2yos first time out seems profitable - so far Have any yet caught the eye as potential stars?
CASUAL SMILE looks to be one to keep on the right side of, she was very green but picked up well to come second on debut at Newmarket. I've been told that LUNASEA (the half-brother to Finsceal Beo in training with Luca Cumani) broke a knee on the gallops this week and needs a year's box rest. He is unlikely to see a racecourse. He cost £500,000 at the sales - ouch!
I think so. To be fair the dam's side don't seem to be very sound: Finsceal Beo's first foal failed to make it to the racecourse due to injury. Named Finsceal Fior he is already at stud as a 3yo!
Inbred to that rogue Raise a Native I see. One line didn't affect Sea the Stars but start inbreeding to a horse who only stood up to 4 races and is known to pass on unsoundness and you may have a problem.
Why on earth would anyone breed a foal from a mare or stallion known to be unsound and worse still to have passed the unsoundness on? Can't speak for anything else but that wouldn't happen in afghan hounds, unless the breeder didn't have a clue and didn't seek advice.
Ron, Raise a Native was a really good horse as far as we know and he has been a great stallion in that he got Alydar, Mr Prospector, Miswaki (Urban Sea's sire) etc.. but there has been a growing concern that he and maybe even his sire is the cause of unsoundness. Basically that you can have too much of him in your pedigree. Native Dancer is a problem because he was Northern Dancer's damsire. Danehill has two crosses of Native Dancer close up as well. Some judges are just saying if you use a sire who has strains of RtN in it make sure the dam is sound and got good sound genes. Difficult!!?
For anyone interested I just googled Raide a Native, unsoundness http://www.reines-de-course.com/raise_a_native.htm
It is always a difficult call on whether or not to breed from lightly raced/unsound individuals. Don't forget Danzig was pretty unsound, managing just three races (all of which he won) before bad knees forced his retirement.
It depends whether the unsoundness is a result of an injury or bad conformation (bearing in mind the latter could of course have been the root cause of an injury). If it's a conformation problem I would not knowingly touch it (aware as I am of exceptions to the rule).
Crepello wasn't sound but his family was generally sound and his sire definitely was. He wasn't too bad as a sire of sound horses. Pinza was unsound and generally got unsound stock Difficult as I say. Raise a Native and Danzig were both so fast it was worth trying and you've got to say they are both great sires. But overegg the custard and you might just end up with a problem
