There's a large anti eu movement in other key eu countries, not just the uk. If we left those elements would gain popularity and other referendums may well follow. Maybe not, who knows. If we leave the eu our ability to veto doesn't matter anymore anyway since we would have left. And personally I don't think leaving the eu makes us less competitive, it totally changes the landscape and our economy would change but change doesn't equal decline.
If there was a proper electoral system where everybody's vote actually counted for something then that could have helped not just some parts of Scotland but also other areas that end up feeling disenfranchised. Instead they just tried to paper over the cracks in one area and then find it didn't even work there. Politicians will do anything to keep most of the power to themselves even if it means going against the 'democratic' rights of people that they hypocritically say is their goal to further.
