Russia's Luna-25 spacecraft has crashed into the Moon after spinning out of control, officials say. It was Russia's first Moon mission in almost 50 years. The unmanned craft was due to be the first ever to land on the Moon's south pole, but failed after encountering problems as it moved into its pre-landing orbit. It was set to explore a part of the Moon which scientists think could hold frozen water and precious elements. Roscosmos, Russia's state space corporation, said on Sunday morning that it had lost contact with the Luna-25 shortly after 14:57pm (11:57 GMT) on Saturday. "The apparatus moved into an unpredictable orbit and ceased to exist as a result of a collision with the surface of the Moon," it said in a statement. It said a special commission would look into why the mission failed. Russia has been racing to the Moon's south pole against India, whose Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft is scheduled to land on there next week. The Luna-25 craft launched from Vostochny Cosmodrome in the far eastern Amur region of Russia on 11 August. It was expected to make history by making a soft landing on Monday or Tuesday, just days before the Indian touchdown.
Fooking idiots, that's what they get for rushing in, hopefully India rickshaw will show how it's done, but even that is a remote possibility.
Yeah not long now, taken them ages, but they've had disaster before, so they are taking their time - whereas Russia thought it would be smart and rush in, ignoring all the previous attempts from Japan and Israel which also ended in disaster. So maybe just maybe India hold the clue to landing on the South Pole, either that or it will be yet another piece of junk dumped up there - all because they think there are water molecules (or whatever the term) there.
I read a little about it 2-3 weeks ago. Apparently the really difficult part is getting it into the polar orbit and it’s just as hard to land it safely. It’s all rough terrain and pitch black. Supposed to be parts of the South Pole that have never ever seen light before. Sounds mission impossible, to me.
Yeah, very difficult. Also been some problem with trying to slow the descent as well, I think. India's attempt this time is supposed to be on some really cheap budget, say compared to what the super powers spend, hence my jokes about going up in a rickshaw.
I'm seeing various times for the moon landing, I thought it was supposed to have happened at 8.30 this morning, but now it's 1.34pm (our time). Although some media sources are stating mid-day. Looking at the timings on the media reports, I'd say 1.34pm is more accurate. I want India to achieve it just for the bantz with the Russians in their mini space race. Failing that it's just another piece of junk on the moon by humans.
You not seen the state of certain areas in Philadelphia? Makes me want to puke when I see the state of some of them.
It's fooking disgusting, people injecting and their legs are just literally rotting away. It's a massive problem and as I said in the earlier post, it makes me want to puke everytime I see it highlighted in the media. As you said, scene from the walking dead.
Well everyone that has attempted it so far has crashed, and India probably had the cheapest budget for this.
