Manny: please do not read this post; just skip to the next one. Rosberg was not good in Barcelona which effectively handed a ray of sunlight to the other bloke's loyal hopefuls; but getting back to a real man's circuit, it is easy to see it was just a break in the clouds… I say with total conviction that Maldonado would do a better job in the Mercedes, which is a very very good car. In fact, I believe every single driver except one: Karthikeyan (who I do not rate at all), would outperform the old devil over a season in the same car.
Sorry again Manny (maybe skip 2 posts!) but I think cosicave is spot on. Due to the amount of testing that is done in Barcelona, Brundle was saying how its common that drivers line up next to their team-mates on the grid, the circuit is much more an aerodynamics exercise than a challenge for drivers. With Schumachers extra experience, and admittedly a very good start, Rosberg couldn't make enough of a difference to seriously challenge, especially with the lack of overtaking opportunities in Barcelona. With regards Karthikeyan, I could not believe how slowly he started FP1, I know he's had limited running at Monaco, but to start with laps in the high 1min30's is ridiculous! Liuzzi is probably slightly too good a driver for HRT, but Karthikeyan does not deserve his place, especially when they got rid of Bruno Senna for him. Sadly though, I guess money talks in F1!
