Happy for the positive news... but will be even happier when it's in the form of an official statement.
tbh I wasn't too concerned about it, the guy is extremely fit and healthy (other than his head atm), and having the sort of medical care most of us dream about affording, so I didn't think there would be too much trouble with the pneumonia. Personally I expect him to make a fairly good recovery, although I think he'll probably resemble someone a bit 'punch drunk' when he has recovered.
Even though I was never a huge fan of Michael I have to admit he is the type of guy who I always thought was invincible. I really believe he's gonna get through this because that's the kind of guy he is. Good luck Michael. I look forward to seeing a great big smile on your face when you wake up.
"Today, Allievi, Italy’s most influential and best connected F1 journalist has written some details of Schumacher’s treatment and condition, the main one being that he is breathing unaided. Todt and Brawn have stayed very close to the situation and to the family. Todt in particular is in constant contact even when not at the hospital. His close friend Prof Gerard Saillant is overseeing the care of the seven times world champion and reports to him several times a day. This I know from personal experience having visited Todt for an interview for the Financial Times last week. He also told me that “You will write another book on Michael. And I will write the Foreword,” referring to the 1997 and 2007 books I wrote about Schumacher. Allievi does not reveal the source of his information in the article, but it is sound, and has details of movements Schumacher has made; occasional twitches of an arm, a hand, a finger. His wife Corinna is by his side constantly. Brawn apparently plays recordings of pit to car radio from their times racing together, “because Michael needs to string together the threads of his life, voices and sounds.”
Hmm, very different tone from Eurosport 'Only a miracle' can save Schumacher, family reportedly told Doctors have told Michael Schumacher's family that "only a miracle" can save the life of the seven-times world champion
It's speculation that doesn't have any more value than those we were dismissing a month ago. Though the longer this drags on the more likely the worst case scenario gets. I doubt the good news report as well, If such a positive step as Michael breathing on his own was happening, surely the family would make a statement confirming it?
Whilst we all respect the wish for family privacy, as he has such a large following around the world an official statement to end any speculation surely would be good now?
Can you breathe on your own in an induced coma? I don't mind the lack of news, but the only way we can take it is in negative light, until we hear something positive. Can't believe it has been nearly 3 months, I remember telling my brother, and saying it is probably a little crash.
Gary Hartstein's blog (here) covered that in great detail a few posts back, and his latest effort basically summarises what we've all been saying about trusting Eurosport/the Telegraph.
For me that's a good sign that he still has some form of automatic control of his breathing and doesn't need a machine to breathe for him. Hopefully the conscious part of his brain can do the same now.
Well here's what I think, taken from what I learned when it first happened. Waking someone fully from a coma (we're not talking having them jumping around or even communicating, just them being aware), takes a long time, the longer the patient has been under the longer the waking up process takes. A waking up process is rarely successful the first time if the patient has been induced over a week, it can take several attempts. The doctors will not attempt to wake a patient unless they are sure he can survive it. Medics tend to give you the worst case sceario, go in for a small op on your toe and they'll tell you there's a chance you could die. The media will write any story based on rumour, wasn't he supposed to have died a few weeks ago? Personally I think he'll make a decentish recovery
