Just got back from The Paulo Show - very impressive, seeing as they saw very much less of the ball than Aldershot (BBC says 35/65, not sure it was that much though), smooth passing game, quick forwards and very tight at the back. Talking of which, even though I can hardly force the words out, I have to say that McOxo looked totally in control in the middle of defence - you could hardly recognise him to be quite honest. I'll post the latest Benson stuff on another thread.
Defence? Does that explain why he was so useless for us - were we playing him in the wrong position all along?
I don't know many 5' 7" centre-backs, Captain B but somehow, it works - his anticipation of some situations today was very good. But isn't this just typical Paulo? Expect the unexpected.
Or maybe Paolo has observed that with his complete lack of creativity centre back is the best place for him. Sometimes, in my more insane moments, I almost wish Paolo were our manager - just for the entertainment value.
Quite right. Everyone who aspires to be a gentleman should acquire an apartment in which to instal his mistress. The alternatives are too squalid ...
Was it a case of "Return of the Sweeper"? They were in fashion in the '70s and I played my shortest player there in the youth team I managed. He was a great reader of the game, ferocious tackler and accurate passer but couldn't run fast or head the ball. Worked a treat. What changed in the game to make them obsolete? I can see that it is harder to play offside using a sweeper, and if opposing teams tried it against us I used to put a forward to "mark" him (which confused the hell out of both of them).
You trying to take the piss, guv? I don't quote from Yanks or Irishmen. That was an original Firmaniism. But you may quote me, if you like.
Brilliant result. And with ten goal attempts to the Gills' four it sounds as if Parky's entertaining attacking style deserved all three points. Next match is at home to Plymouth so that is three more points as good as in the bag and almost within touch of a play-off place. If Powell doesn't get a win against the Udders he can start looking over his shoulder as the directors may start to realise they have blundered. I am sure Houndal agrees. If Houndal attended this match I would like to know for how many of the 90 minutes the ball was in touch with the playing surface. I am guessing not many. Soccer is so more interesting when played in three dimensions rather than two.
Sometimes with Mr Parkinson in charge I thought he was searching for some sort of fourth dimension with his tactics and recruitment policy
Ah, my 8 crapped out ! - However, i had a cunning plan - i had 56 50p's on 5's as well, so i won on Spurs,WHam,Cardiff,N County and Chels ! However, still a major loss financially !
Eddie, yes I was there but sorry didnt watch too much football (both factual and literal) I was too busy praising Parky for his 2 year tenure "dahn ar grahnd" and wishing him all the best in the play offs Cant see any way Bradford wont beat Plymouth at least by 5 - they are such an entertaining side. In fact, its worth a punt
Will posters stop going on about Parky FFS.Otherwise i will keep posting about Dowie's tenure at the club or Pardew's or worse still Sir Les Reed.I don't get this hatred of a decent man in Parky.Ok he was not the best football Manager but his budget was extremely limited. For all those people who have selective memories Powell went what was it 14 games without winning with the players Parky had to work with.
At the game Parky took a hell of a load of flak, and not just from me. It seems the Gills dont like him either. I feel slightly honoured that he called me a knob head - or at least I think it was directed at me. The stewards got a bit involved but paid lip service. Quite the worst game of football I have ever seen, but then again Parky was part of it. Eddie was right, the ball never touched the ground.
