Hello, all. Hope everyone well. Good, good. I’ll nominate, to the regular readers, a filly with a lovely name re the morrow.

APPLE’S SHAKIRA’s last 2 races have both been at Grade 1 level and she started at odds of 11/10 and 7/4 in these 2 contests. Ran respectably in both as well finishing 4th in the Triumph Hurdle and then 3rd in Aintree’s ‘Anniversary Hurdle’. The old girl though takes a step down tomorrow to handicap level (for the first time) and is set to run off a more than fair mark of 142.

Prior to this pair of Grade 1 defeats Apple’s Shakira had won 3 out of 3 for the forum’s favourite trainer (including twice at Grade 2 level by a combined total of 25 lengths). She didn’t simply defeat ‘trees’ either, in those heats, as left in her wake were such types as Gumball (subsequently Grade 1 placed), Eragon De Chanay (won 2 subsequent races and runner-up in £40k handicap), Speedo Boy (dual winner since) and Look My Way (has gone onto win the £50,000 Chester Plate, on the level, off 93).

Apple’s Shikara’s opponents look a noble bunch but you would have to say if there is one animal, in the field, with the potential to being capable of being a lot better than their current marks then it would be the Lieutenant’s representative. That great man also knows what it takes to win this prize having been victorious in the event in 3 of the previous 6 runnings.

You do, of course, have to take her fitness on trust but I’m sure that the Lieutenant, ably assisted by his Privates, will have sufficiently prepared the old girl on the gallops at Seven Barrows. In Lieutenant Henderson we trust and all that.

So then, pilgrims, I think Apple’s Shikira can commence her term with a win, of the morrow, and believe her capable of conceding weight all round.

Good luck old girl and good luck, team.

Off to Sandown tomorrow for what looks a cracking card. Really looking forward to seeing lalor and am edging towards un de sceaux in the tingle creek, sorry if I’ve put the mockers on.

Morning, great days racing today!

A few look worth a bet, up at Aintree 1.30 I am taking David Pipe to have got his runner VIEUX LION ROUGE 11/1 E/W back to form after a wind op.

<cheers>

With the ground going Chepstow heavy, I’ve gone for two horses carrying little weight at the bottom of the handicaps.

The first being Venetia’s Top And Drop, who is carrying a mere 10’2 from a lowly mark of 96. She has form from last year on soft surfaces and I thought she was going nicely enough at Wetherby in her first chase to suggest that this mark will be exploitable.

She’s had a pipe opener and now the soft ground has come, I expect to see better from the horses from this yard who’ve already had a run.

Then later on the card we have Falcons Fall who is on 10’9 in the eights but gets another 7lb off his back with his jockeys allowance. I like the lad too, he’s got a 15% strike rate this season and is worth a bit more than his claim suggests.

This horse has winning course form on this going and is coming back from a poor season last year. This means his mark could be exploitable and at 16s he looks a fair bet.

Two 16s shots at Chepstow

I was thinking pretty much the same about Chepstow and have done Venetia's four as her horses seem to flourish in this type of ground. The one I liked best is her YALLTARI, 1.55. Has won the last 3 and in heavy so as long as the fences don't catch him out I can see this one going close. At 8/1 I will go ew.

Not that I'm a lover of Billy hills, but they're paying out on 7 places in this race ;)

Morning men starboard ten, as an old forum friend used to say.

I read a nice piece by Mike Cattermole on the Sporting Life website the other day talking about the Tingle Creek, and how it would be a much better race if it were still a handicap. I have to agree with that - some of Dessie's finest performances were in the race when giving lumps of weight away and if today's race were run with Altior carrying 11-12, Saint Calvados 10-7, Sceau Royal 10-8 and Un De Sceaux 11-5 it would be an even better spectacle.

As it is, my heart will be with Sceau Royal, I love this horse to bits and he should be able to get a lovely tow into the race. Slightly worried the ground may be too juicy for him and he faces not only the best 2-miler around but 2 others who will relish conditions. I would love to see him still swinging on the bit coming to the pond fence with Darryl Jacob waiting to pull the trigger, I just hope his speed is not blunted by the ground. Fingers crossed <ok>

Also off to Sandown and I’m edging towards Altior! Reason being I think Sceau Royal has just as good a chance as Un de Sceaux, so I’m just going to stick with what I think is the classier horse.

Should be a great day though!
