Not as if Gosden sets the price. If you were his trainer you'd probably say it was a solid run, wouldn't you? It was a decent enough run for a horse with so little racecourse experience, but his finishing effort did leave a bit to be desired.
I think some dont quite understand the sectionals, Jason Weaver saying Waldkonigs final 2f was faster than Kachy means nothing without context. In Waldkonigs race they literally walked round and he basically had a 3f breeze out of a jog at the end. Kachy ran the last 5f in 56.7 Waldkonig was almost 6 seconds slower clocking 62.34 for the final 5f.
It took Palace Pier a bit of time to get going and it looked for a moment that he might not reel the leader in but ultimately it was comfortable and a decent performance after an injury curtailed his 2YO career. You would be tempted to nudge his official rating towards 110 after that show and he gave the runner up start and 9 lbs there.
The runner up gave Mishriff 6lbs and a 2.1/2 length beating at Newbury back end of last season. PALACE PIER gave the runner up 9lbs and let him have first run today. It took Havlin forever to pull him up and we all know he is one of the stronger jocks. I am impressed.
Hm. Not Frankie’s finest hour imo; seemed to get shoving far too early. Well done Andrew Balding and Oisin Murphy though
Gut feeling about Pinatubo was correct, was the finished article very early last season and theyve caught up with him now. Kameko will likely be favourite for the Derby now but I think 10f will be his trip, good for them to get a quick replacement after what happened with Roaring Lion. Very happy with that run from Military March, perfect prep for the Derby.
Disappointing for Pinatubo but fantastic for Oisin Murphy - the future star of flat racing. The first of many Classic winners I’m sure
Military March was keen going down passing the Fav and then overshooting the start and walked back. Done well to finish 3rd lacking for a bit speed. Derby for me.
Oh well Grendel, do you still want to sue Balding? All trainers get it wrong (eg Punctuation) but Balding is a top trainer.
Kameko looked the least impressive physically of the 1-2-3 there but he did it well. Good run from Wichita as well and he is clearly Aidan's best by a fair way. Pinatubo was only ever going to slip back a bit this year and he came under pressure earlier than you would have wanted. He looked like staying on but his run petered out. Military March has run well with a view to stepping up in trip but Al Suhail was feeble and Charlie Appleby is dreaming if he thinks that horse is a Derby contender. On today's evidence you would say he hasn't trained on. I don't know what Mum's Tipple was doing in that race, it was an afterthought at best and Cepheus should never have been set that task as a second racecourse experience, I mean, what good could come from that run? Kinross was always over-hyped and Ralph Beckett rarely seems to have a realistic Guineas contender from his promising 2YOs. Well well, after playing several and having setbacks and ****ers, I still made a profit with the 10/1 winner and can dream of Boomer tomorrow for a double.
Pinatubo was immensely disappointing. I didn't think Buick rode a particularly good race, as he pushed the horse to take a position about 2f out then went still on him. When he did start pushing he got no response. It almost looks as if he didn't stay, whatever Buick says, As a famous tjockey once said you must only make one run.
I'll let him off now. He's back in the good books. I decided 10/1 was too big today and played him. Not the biggest colt and Wichita is a better specimen but you could not fault Kameko today. Not sure he will stay the Derby trip though.
Rating him higher than Frankel was a disgrace, National Stakes was impressive but for me Frankels Royal Lodge has to be one of the best 2yo performances of all time. Pinatubo was never going to be a Frankel, he was the finished article at 2, Frankel wasnt really the finished article until he was a 4yo.
