Desert Orchid was the last I think, and before that you have to go back to the 60s or early 70s I think. So it's very rare for a 10 year old to win a Gold Cup. Not impossible but very rare. You also have to remember Cue Card has already attempted the Gold Cup when he was in his prime years and couldn't win it, so it looks a big ask to do it at 10
Cue card has been around a long time, horses don't care how old each other is. Cue card has been outstanding this year, he has beat all before him, now vatour the next Pegasus and don polli everyone's gold cup winner including me. Conergree, we wil have to see. It might never happen
If it's testing on CGC day then Cue Card will likely struggle against more dour types like Djakadam and Road to Riches. But on decent I would like to think he will get up the hill ok. It's certainly grand that he can still win the bonus and that will surely help generate interest outside the racing rank and file. Which is good for racing right?
I think its wrong to say that CUE CARD couldn't win it in his best years....this year is his best year! And probably largely due to the wind op! To all those that say the bumper is a nonsense and never provides future champions NAH NAH NA NA NAHHHHHH
Don't forget Kauto Star put up what was considered his best ever performance in the KG at the same stage of his career as Cue Card did today, and he fell a tired and beaten horse in the Gold Cup a few months later as a 10 year old. Everyone would have thought he was in his prime back then, but that 10 year tag is hard to shake off in such a gruelling race
Only just seen Paddy Brennan was fined and banned for 11 days going over the permitted number of times he can use the whip on Cue Card...Sickening when you've been beat like that! You'd have thought they'd have chucked him out seeing as he beat Beefys Christmas Banker in a photo!
Meanwhile back at huntingdon, Mrs Florida and myself cleaned up with the claimers and ditched dickie Johnson . Never used to take much notice of bumpers but starting to enjoy them now with not much luck. They are a minefield.
Dessie won it as a ten year old mate, which is what Cue Card will be. Dessie was third at 11 and third at 12....!
This is a reason the rules are a load of crap in their current guise. If the jockey over uses the whip I think the horse simply must be thrown out.
Ruby got a ban too, not sure what for though. Edit: Ruby got a 2 day whip ban. That makes Al Ferof the moral winner then!
