Professional job by brave men. Also brave are the women who try to help in a war torn country, but regrettably put themselves in the position to be taken as hostages. Our stance of not paying ransoms is the only proper response and, yes, I would say the same if it was a member of my family. The paying of ransoms or release of prisoners only encourages more hostage taking.

I'm not that nationalistic and few things make me truly proud of Britain and England, but the SAS are the best specialist military force in the world and that I am proud of.

You're grown up now you should be reading a proper newspaper.

On this mission they were accompanied by American Special Services troops who are equally as good as are the French.

I worked with a guy who used to train the SAS and had a neighbour who was a member. Both were absolute basket cases! Brave, courageous but absolutely barmy.

I don't read the sun, hence the first section of my sentence.

All I can add is that if in trouble I would rather be rescued by the SAS/SBS than by the Americans. Things can go wrong in any hostage situation, inclduing with our troops, but Americans too gung ho. Don't know about the French.

What`s your definition of a `proper` newspaper Godders? How do you know that the the Americans and French are as good as us ? My grandfather was in the Machine Gun Corps in WW1, and therefore his wellbeing was dependent on individuals like your grandfather -as your footer states, an `callous uncaring WWI General`. My Grandad survived, only just, or I wouldn`t be here today.

I think The Sun pretty unanimously doesn't count as a proper newspaper

I think raghead is tied to religion- and that is being a muslim. so what if it offends people, normal people use words but those religious zelots use bombs and terror. we are nothing but dogcrap on the bottom of thier shoes ( or sandles). religion is the most evil and dangerous thing on this planet

Oh dear. Just stop now you're embarrassing yourself.

It was a poor generalisation of all Muslims.

love it that only one raghead managed to get a shot off- the rest were sleeping or shagging a goat but still were put down like the dogs they are. I`m sure some liberal PC waste of space will soon be bitching why they were no taken prisoner. they use extreme force- ask the hostige taker who got shot 67 times in the iran embassy siege.

Liberal PC waste of space here. People like you are the reason why our trigger-happy "brave soldiers" are running around in their countries, murdering and torturing innocents. Our armed forces commit the same atrocities theirs do, and they all need to be brought home. You need to get a grip my ignorant, racist friend.

Your use of the word "raghead" makes you a ****.

Ragheads, Camel jockeys why does it matter what we call Taliban hostage taking cowards? It's just a derisory term exactly the same as we are "infedels" to them. Take the moral high ground all you like but they are scum and deserve no respect.

Hostage taking cowards? The cowards are the ones hiding behind air strikes and apaches.
The Afghanis have successfully repelled every imperialistic atttempt for centuries from the British Empire to Russia etc.

so you say it is ok for these brave taliban freedom fighters to kidnap 4 helpless people that were only trying to help people, probably had the camera ready to record the beheading. You my friend are a deluded idiot if you think they would not be killed- and why, because they have an inbred hatred to anything that they do not believe in. sorry but a major war will happen, millions will die, maybe not in our lifetime, but the muslim faith should be one of love and helping of the weak, but zelots have warped the words of mohammed to fit thier agenda. there will not be and can not be any peace with the likes of the taliban as we will always be considered by them as the enemy. By the way, every person on this planet is racist in one way or another

A couple of quick comments.

With regards to the Sun what you get is a brief jingoistic statement that panders to the base instincts of hatred.

If you read one of the broadsheets you would know that these people were not the taliban but were a group of criminals who had kidnapped the 4 aid workers to pressurise the Afghan government into releasing two of their leaders in exchange.

The criminals were originally hiding in caves in the very north of Afghanistan but for some reason they split with one group taking the hostages and moving to a nearby village the others remaining in the caves. The Americans attacked those in the caves and killed all of them. The SAS as we know made a surprise attack on the village killing a substantial number of the criminals and rescuing the hostages. Credit has to be given to both sets of soldiers.

With regard to my signature that has nothing to do with the history of my family but is linked to another thread about Eton and the number of ex schoolboys in the Cabinet. If you know your history you will know that the description fits one or more of the present Cabinet.

With regards to the Machine Gun Corps I could bore you to death about its establishment and early training as well as Baker Carr who was influential in its establishment. I recently visited the Abbey at Wisque in France where the early training centre for the MGC was established. If you Grandfather survived WW1 as a machine gunner he did well as every soldier wanted to kill them in an assault. Several of my ancestors were also in the MGC

At what date did your grandfather join the MGC and which company was he in. Do you know much about his service in the war? The battles he was involved in?

It wouldn`t bore me to death at all, quite the opposite. At the time of his dispersal in June 1919, he was regimental number 2573, Corporal 6th Battalion, 32 Company, MGC. History I have is a bit sketchy, but he was at Ypres in 1915, and was wounded on 2 occasions - don`t know in which engagements. Your right, once they started firing, they had a couple of minutes before their artillery gave them some special treatment. Do you have a source for detailed records ? I have a photo of him training with a Vickers gun - I always assumed in England, but maybe it was in Wisque.
