Difficult. I think most Swedes are pretty happy with how things have been handled over here (which is somewhat of a surprise considering how chaotic our government tends to be), at the same time it feels like we've gone back to our good ol' World War strategy. We're "neutral".

Taking that most Swedes are satisfied with how things have been handled here I think it's hard to imagine it the UK way. That it's a bit over the top.
Swedes in general are excellent at avoiding crowds. "We don't need rules on how to act"

It did change somewhat after one of the most famous Swedish radio/tv hosts passed away (Adam Alsing) at the age of 51. He's one of those that everyone above 18 knows about. It suddenly became a bit more "real".

But yeah, I think most Swedes probably see the UK way as being overkill, altho the virus is very serious, acting in fear might be worse than the virus itself.
All the decisions are basically taken by the Public Health Agency (on request of the government) and they hope the less strict rules will help Sweden recover quicker than many other countries.

See that's interesting because I always saw Scandinavian nations as much more mature and self controlled, they don't need to be forced to stay indoors because they wouldn't take the piss.

A lot of countries are looking at how we've handled this and are, generally speaking, gobsmacked. Ditto the US.

Conspiracy theory answer: the Illuminati lizard men obviously know that you're Bob.

More mundane answer: I started to reply to a post of yours about school (re)-opening last night, got distracted, never finished it, thought I'd deleted all the saved stuff before I posted in reply to Bob, but obviously hadn't.

Up to everyone individually which they believe of course.

Do you want to have a pop at this country for anything else while you're on a roll...? there will be work forces around the globe who will wish they were in the UK with the support they've received... we are in the same boat as many other countries being shafted buying PPE, we are in the same boat as many other countries who weren't prepared for the enormity of this etc etc..

Well, I'll give you an example. A friend of mine, a former housemate at university, is a journalist in Poland (he's from Worcester originally). He said that the general consensus in Poland is that they can't believe that with the resources we've got, we've got a death toll as high as we do, especially given the fact that we aren't even connected to the mainland. Poland generally speaking has the worst healthcare system in Europe and he says that even they are relieved they don't have the mess that we do.

I couldn't give any less of a **** about feelings, we're now the worst in Europe and we shouldn't be. I imagine there were plenty of work forces across the planet who wished they had access to UK healthcare, but I can't imagine there'd be many who would want to be here given the gaffes that have happened.

It's not like this came out of nowhere. The rest of Europe was locking down, we had contact with China, Italy and France (not to mention the WHO) telling us that this is to be taken very seriously and we barely did anything for over a month. It wasn't until the government realised what they'd done that they reversed their decision and followed the advice that the rest of the world was giving us (it's pretty well documented that we changed course, that isn't conjecture). By then it was too late.

Anybody suggesting that we didn't have ample time to prepare, or any prior awareness of this is ****ing deluded. We had ample knowledge of it, we just thought we were better than everybody else and ignored it.

Look at America as a good example of thinking you know best.

Right, so then knowing that we have a lot of tourism and business coming here, there wasn't much of an excuse for not taking bigger precautions, was there?

The European Parliament passed a resolution on Friday (17 April) describing the recent Hungarian and Polish government actions during the coronavirus outbreak as “totally incompatible with European values.”

Lawmakers called on the Commission to determine whether Hungary and Poland breached EU law, and urged the Council to put Article 7 procedures back on the agenda. Sanctions under Article 7 of the EU treaty could result is a suspension of voting rights.

In three paragraphs of the joint resolution on EU response to the pandemic and its consequences, signed by the presidents of all four big political groups of the European Parliament, MEPs echoed the stance of the European Commission that responses must be “in line with the rule of law,” proportionate, “clearly related” to the health crisis and “limited in time.”

“We want to exit this crisis through democracy , we want to make a success living by our rules and our treaties,” Parliament president David Sassoli told journalists. “We must not overturn the rules and values that govern our co-existence.
