Yeah Vertonghen is a player of good enough quality to push the others for there spots but also career wise i don't think he'd mind not being a guaranteed starter as he would get a lot of game time anyway in a team who really go for top honors. I've been saying for a few seasons that we should sign him up and now he would still be a great addition to the squad. Any combination of TV, Kosc, Mert, Vert as CB's i'd be pretty confident with - and that leaves RB: Sagna, Jenkinson (Kosc cover) - LB: Santos, Gibbs (Vert cover). Djourou as the back-up and Miquel the player to worry the others for there team place as he develops. That really would be a fantastic set of defenders. @PISKIE - imo the best pairing we have at CB is - Kosc and Verm - they are two players who stand out as brilliant defenders and think they can play well together. I rate Mert highly and think he plays well with the Verminator, but Kosc can't be dropped from the team - he has been our best player this season behind RVP imo.
I concur, which is why i think our best back foru atm is --Kos----Met--Verm--Santos. Kos provides rigidity to the back line, and he has been an inspiring signning by wenger, but i see him a CB in the future.
Whats the big problem ? Play Miquel there ... as long as he can defend there shouldn't be a problem, I'm not interested in his offensive skill. If he is a sub for the Arsenal first team he must be a decent defender FFS, if not why is he a sub ?? If players are not good enough to play they shouldn't be subs. In fact, a club shouldn't have a reserve team if they can't provide players for the first team. I've seen too many instances of clubs playing defenders as strikers, for example, because they didn't have any fit first team strikers, surely an average reserve team striker would be better than playing a first team defender as a striker !!!
It leaves us in a tricky position for a couple of weeks, but once we get both Jenkinson and Gibbs back by the end of the month, we'll have players who can play at LB. No panic.
I think that we can still cope with this latest injury, vermalen can slot in there and i have also been impressed with miquel so i don't think we will need to worry too much, also i know that he wouldn't get a look in but does anyone know if the young full back angha is any good. I think that our squad is will look a lot better when everyone is back and if you look at the amount of full backs we have we do look pretty solid defensively especially with kosielney's form.
