We also need to take into account that the rules have been gradually tinkered with over the last 30 - 40 years almost always in favour of attacks .
They never used to be, they've become more selfish. I think that is a result of playing alongside Salah and a case of "well you wouldn't have given it me" rather than "I want the goal". In fact that applies to Salah too. He wasn't as selfish until Mane equalled / beat (can't recall which it is) Salah in one season
how does being an armpit offside favour them? Clear daylight was the rule and advantage was always given to the striker.
I was thinking about this to myself today having not seen this thread. I think Salah is the greatest forward we've had, since I've been watching anyway. Suarez was an incredible player for us, but obviously flawed. Then what he's gone on to do at Barca and Atletico is amazing, he's clearly one of the best to ever play the game, he's also sorted his problems out. But I'll judge him on the period with us. Torres was obviously excellent too but for me lacked maybe the completeness that Salah and Suarez both have. So on that basis, Suarez usually wanting to eat etc, Torres not as rounded, Salah gets it. Just my thoughts, people will think differently which is all fine and great. I won't get into others (Fowler, Sturridge etc) since the thread isn't about them.
If you way up the good and bad salah comes out on top. I know I tend to put the suarez debacles to the back of my mind when I think about him, the biting, the racist episode, the ****ing t shirts. Torres downing tools and being fairly **** for a good period because he obviously wanted out. We may still see some ****e from salah, we may be lucky that both Madrid and barca can't afford **** all at the minute so he's fairly safe. But I can certainly see your point
Put Salah in the Brod team instead of Suarez and we don't finish second. Suarez in this team would break every record going. I rate Suarez above almost every other Liverpool player I've seen. The only player that tops him is Gerrard.
I agree. Suarez is the best player (ability wise) to play for this club. There are players who are world class, there are players who score goals, create chances etc etc ... then there are players who do all of the above but have this aura and desire to win at all costs, who then also raises the games of everyone else around them. Suarez and Gerrard are those players, and I would add VVD to that list.
well advantage wasn't always given to the striker whatever the rules said However the simple fact is changing the offside rule from offside is offside to you can be offside for 5 mins but if you are onside just before the ball was played to you everything is fine massively swings the offside rule in the attacks favour .
When was that a thing though? Maybe going back to 70s and 80s but from as long as I’ve been watching there’s always been the interfering with play part to stop someone on opposite side being flagged off when no where near the ball. mid say offside favours defenders more now than it did 10-20 years ago tbh
Despite my earlier comment on Salah I do have to agree with this. What Suarez did within the team he was playing in was remarkable. I stand by my comment that Salah is the best out and out forward we've had, but Suarez was often all over the pitch as well as putting in the numbers up front, and he dragged that team kicking and screaming along with him to higher levels. But I also have to come back to his flaws of course
A CF can stand offside as a ball is played to a winger who then centres to him to slot past GK and that is allowed as long as when the winger crosses he is onside and no i can't remember when that was introduced but i'm sure it was after the 80's - probably tbf i do have problems remembering exactly when stuff happened.
I get what you’re saying, but the brilliance he showed in the season we finished second was something I had not seen before and I haven’t seen since (in a Liverpool shirt). Every game he had me excited and on the edge of my seat when he played. I got over Torres leaving, despite being heartbroken about his choice etc. I still to this day wish Suarez had stayed.
With you mate. If I was given the choice to bring one player back for one season, it would be Suarez.
Salah aint the best and neither is suarez. Rush was the best striker we've had imo. His record speaks for itself After that its all debateable. Dalglish, hunt, keegan, toshack fowler owen. Whoever you.like. I still stand by my view that barnes was better than suarez
