This is complete bollocks. I have been attending Saints matches since 1974 and been a seasom ticket holder since 1990. I cannot recall ever hearing any racism directed towards Saints players at football matches. I think we are generally really good in that respect albeit i used to work with one individual selected for a short piece of SFC publicity played before each match who was racist and disliked any black players. He was reknown in my former company for being an idiot and is the only person i have ever come across as genuinly being racist in all my time as a supporter. He used to impersonate Nathan Dyer but more notorious for his bad breath. He was pretty much hated and ridiculed. Just do not accept that is more than a few , unintelligent individuals. I think Saints fans are better than that.
Not on this site, in my experience, any hint at racism, whether intentional or accidental, has been stepped on early doors, not so on other sites, particularly X.
But you said you hadn't actually seen any. I think you're imagining ghosts where there are none (and I'd ignore anything on X for your own health to be honest - huge amounts of bots etc).
I agree with your premise, but you are very naive to think it doesn't exist. We are very fortunate that in my 70+ years of following the Saints I have never experienced an actual incident of racial abuse, but I have heard of a few occasions that it happened. There have been plenty of examples of "Post Code racism", I dislike Skates the same as most Saints fans, but most of my responses are done with humour in mind, never resorting to serious abuse, and never with any form of violence. I was also a Nathan Dyer fan, he was good on his day.
Not strictly true, the ones I have suspected were reported, perpetrator blocked, message deleted. Would never repost them so that they could be seen again. So I can't offer any evidence. Your advice is very valid.
I come from a background similar to your friend and I have absolutely no problem with it at matches. As long as people from my background aren't given grief for not taking part or wearing a poppy then it's all good. Been at StMarys at the weekends it was done before and it was tasteful and poignant... was at the England Ireland game at wembley last season. Wasn't a big fan of having the army bringing out the flags etc before that one given the history and was just provocative, especially given members of the forces were waving over and shouting towards us
So basically there’s no evidence that it’s racially motivated, just what you think. Glad we cleared that up.
“No racist posts on the internet”? That wasn’t really what we were discussing. I’ve not seen, heard or read anything racist directed at Bazunu, so I was surprised to hear that you had. Then I realised that you hadn’t, and that it was just what you thought.
I can't argue with you anymore, you haven't paid. To be honest your intervention had me questioning my own perception, I have been thinking that my long held beliefs about decency and dignity may be flawed and that I have been misreading the messages. Food for thought.
Well, that was my first win since Everton and it was...a bit of a weird one. Don't know if it was just me, or I've forgotten what it's like to win, but I thought there was a bit of weird atmosphere in the ground, like people didn't know whether to still be annoyed or to try and get behind the team. Afterall, the last home game was Preston where the crowd fully turned on SR. There wasn't one SR out song on Saturday, not one you're not fit to wear the shirt either (albeit we scored early and won fairly comfortably). There was obviously the GON stuff and a bit of Oriol stuff, just think the game passed by feeling a bit like purgatory. On the game itself,...also a bit strange. Should have gone in 3 or 4 up at HT not 2-1. We played some good stuff going forward, had a bit more energy and purpose in our play and yet still completely switched off for their goal (which was awful from our midfield and GK) and sat back for large periods of the game inviting pressure on ourselves. Not blaming the young lad as thought he was pretty tidy, but we lost all physicality in the middle when Downes went off. Thought we looked a bit nervous in there which is again understandable as that is an incredibly young and inexperienced midfield partnership second half, and Sheff Weds completely dominated the ball without really doing too much with it. Adarmas brilliant goal so early in the second half was vital in how that played out as it gave us the breathing space against a team that doesn't score many. I don't think we win that if we were playing a good side though, and yet it was still an improvement on recent games. So yeah, weird one all over. Important thing is we got the points and can hopefully build from here.
