But if we leave 3 up front they are GUARANTEED to leave 4 back to cover them to avoid being over-run on a counter, given that if they don't then corners become more of an opportunity for us than them if we can just get a clearance. Someone said teams only score from 1 in 30 corners, I'd hope for better odds than that if we were 3 on 2 or 3. So whatever we do we will always have an extra 2 men defending the corner as they will always an extra one staying back and the taker btw this theory does run out eventually as if we kept 10 up front then they would clearly not keep 10 back
Here's an interesting one. 11 Liverpool players defending a corner, 10 seconds later they score. Fast players...they might be on to something there. Fully recommend listening to this with the sound on.
First thought as soon as defender heads away ball from those two Liverpool players on the edge of the box is - break quickly. Whereas at the moment you can imagine a Saints player just punting it first time downfield. Two or three players breaking as fast as they can is not a risky move because we had everyone back in the first place, meaning 7 defenders are back if the counter attack breaks down. Liverpool away semi final last season? Also really highlights why short corners are a perfectly fine option particularly if JWP is not on the pitch, even if the crowd groans every time.
Barcelona don't hoof many corners into the box these days. I'm sure that I've read it's equally likely that they'll take a short one in order to have possession in the final third of the field. Vin
I'm not someone who likes to criticise my fellow fan. Everyone sees football differently, everyone is entitled to a view or a particular preferred way of playing football. But if there is one single common trait that I wouldn't mind many fans losing, it's the groaning at a short corner, the desperate want to get all corners into the box. As Qwerty highlights, it's not as if many goals are scored from corners. Especially in our case. So why is going short with the odd corner, a bad thing in any way whatsoever?
I intensely dislike short corners to be fair, I know that it's not logical mind, it just frustrates the hell out of me and it's a habit I can't break Worst one was last minute away to Milan last year, genuinely infuriated me (and most of the 7000 there to be fair).
“Especially in our case. So why is going short with the odd corner, a bad thing in any way whatsoever?[/QUOTE]” Because they sometimes end up in our own half, as passing options get shut down and we revert to back passing, and general fannying around, whilst our centre backs are still in the opposition penalty area waiting to get on the end of a cross.
Absolutely sometimes they do, no question. But I'm happy to weigh that against the number of 'normal' of corners that go into the keepers hands, or are headed harmlessly over the crossbar, or are cleared for a throw in on the half way line. Qwerty has give the stat of 1 in 30 corners scored. Unless you've got a deadball specialist on the pitch, or you're drilled hard to be a threat from set pieces, then I'm perfectly happy to try something different now and again. Rarely do short corners work. But rarely do 'normal' corners either. At least with the former, you have a greater chance of retaining possession.
Personally, I think all our corner kicks should be played directly back to Fraser, as that’s where most of them end up within a few seconds anyway. It will just save time.
This conversation will not be complete until @Le Tissier's Laces tells us about his love of short corners
On the subject of short corners, anyone remember this? From about 30 seconds in shows exactly what happened... apologies for really poor quality couldn't find anything better.
When I played in the southern league, we were doing that back in about season 94/95. First time we did it, referee blew up and made us retake the corner. Next game we told the referee before the game of our plan. My lawyers are still waiting to Hear back from Giggs and Rooney!!
I must admit I thought it was really clever and should have been allowed... think that one was disallowed wasn't it?
