Oh Theo did really well on that breakaway, but if he had had a bit more pace he could have got closer before he shot and made certain. De Gea made a great save I agree.
Whilst an extra yard of pace would have made a difference, and Walcott 5 years ago probably scores, I think the mistake was to not cut across the defender. If he cut across him, he would have taken Martinez (I think?) out of the picture and had more time to slot it past De Gea.
I think Theo's mistake was training first with Shane Long, then Che Adams. Welcome to Southampton, where we turn strikers into near missers
Exactly - then he could have taken the shot on his right, if Martinez wasn`t tempted to bring him down.
Though Martinez needed to bring him down outside the box for two reasons - a second yellow and JWP has more chance of converting a free kick than a penalty
I get far more nervous for these type of games. For the free hits like Sunday a good performance and a point is a bonus. These type of games there is some expectation that we might win. Brentford at home is winnable (ask Everton) but they have had an excellent season. Added to that is the significance that the win takes us out of the bottom 3. I can't get to the game Wednesday but there is no place I would rather be. No idea what sort of performance we will get but it's never dull supporting Saints. I didn't think we would even be where we are now 2 weeks ago, but the squad have responded well. COYR Let's smash em. (Smashing them 1-0 will do)
It does feel like a really big game for us. I know every game is big now, but I feel tomorrow could show us how far we have really come under Selles. If we put out a performance of the same level we did against Leeds then it will feel like Selles hasn't really improved our performances all that much. You can only go on so long picking up wins whilst riding your luck (Chelsea & Leicester), eventually we need to win because we are the better team that created better chances, rather than because Iheanacho missed 2 or 3 sitters. I have a very unfamiliar feeling of confidence about this one, I'm going for 2-1 Saints.
Massive game for us, against a very strong side. If we can win then the great escape is very much on.
I think your point of 'riding our luck' is nicely put, but I think Selles through such performances is getting some confidence back into the squad. You're right on another day we could have lost by 3 or more goals, but we didn't and as such the players can now see the very strong possibility of a decent end to the season.
Absolutely, and at the end of the season it doesn't matter if we play **** every week so long as we get the points. I just worry it isn't going to happen often enough to keep us up. Definitely right about confidence though, a few players are much better under Selles. Bednarek, for example, is putting in his best performances in years. Lavia also seems to playing with more confidence and taking more risks.
He's playing like he was at the start of the season. We (and Ralph) were very unfortunate he got injured when he did.
Yeah, he was fantastic in the game against Chelsea which was probably the last time we played really well under Ralph. It is a job to tell whether he was poor under Jones because he was still recovering from injury or whether it was because Nathan Jones is... Nathan Jones. Likely a combination of both.
The fact we're beginning to look like a competent football side is in parts both really quite pleasing for the rest of the season, and really quite annoying that we spaffed what could have been a half decent season up the wall by appointing that bloke, when the probable answer was under our noses.
Looking at the Saints website, only a handful of tickets left for this game. Should be a good crowd tomorrow night.
Yeah I’m still convinced we will go down by something like 2 points, and we all can point to the Wolves game as the big moment where we should’ve won and stayed up. The board shouldn’t given Jones that game after his meltdown after Brentford and Selles would’ve been in charge
