BIRMINGHAM City have admitted for the first time they rejected a £6m offer from Saints for goalkeeper Jack Butland last summer.

Again shows NC's committment to improve!

It also shows that NC will not be taken for a ride, £6m would have been a big gamble, although shown to be a good prospect, there was no guarantee that he would be Premier class. Birmingham needed the money but got too greedy, now they are paying the price.

Can't see many being prepared to pay those wages!

I can think of a few teams... One prime candidate.

This is the problem however with experienced proven players, you don't play in the Prem for 5+ years at a good level without earning around 70k+, and once you're at that point in your career and at that level, you're not going to be too inclined to take a pay cut.

If we want to bring in players like Lescott, Dawson and whoever, we're going to have to break our current wage structure to do so. And then once they're in earning 80k, why shouldn't Lallana and Ramirez be looking for raises?

Personally I don't see us bringing in anything resembling a big domestic player or any proven Premier League players, the value for money just isn't there. Still holding out hope for a big foreign coup, a la Gaston.

<whistle>

.

Why don't we go Man City-esque and just buy all the best players from the teams in the relegation battle, regardless of whether or not they're an improvement?

Too right, what a bad decision by them. Doubt they will get a better offer again.

Being reported by some Italian media that Saints have tabled a bid for 25 year old Italian CB Davide Astori from Cagliari.

6ft2, left-footed, Italian international. Although he turned down a move to Spartak Moscow in the summer after an 11.8m deal was agreed.

Cagliari need to sell, such are the state of Serie A finances right now.

Daniele Labanti (remember him?!) has said he thinks this deal is possible.

Sounds good DTLW! Saint Astori has a nice ring to it!

Astori is very good, but he turned down Spartak, a Champions League team, to "achieve his goals" at Cagliari. Not sure he'll be jumping at the chance to join Premier League relegation candidates.

Astori would be fantastic, I rate him. Would feel sorry for Yoshida though assuming he was the one to make way, he's come on leaps and bounds but having a established powerful CB like Astori could do us the world of good. Having a left footer at LCB would be handy, too.

Southampton have joined Napoli and Juventus in the bidding war for Cagliariand Italy defender Davide Astori.
The 25-year-old has been in the headlines this week due to interest from both Juve and the Partenopei.
According to the latest reports, Premier League outfit Southampton have also set their sights on Astori.
There are even suggestions that the Saints are the only club to have so far made an official proposal worth €10m.

Norwegian Brede Hangeland of Fulham failed to sign a new contract last summer, existing one expires this summer.

A solid 31yo established PL centre back who imo would be a great addition to our squad. Redknapp rumoured to be interested which he denies.
