Who would want to be in charge of recruitment under Levy? Be easy as they don’t do any

He would be a huge asset there should be little doubt..........I hope he had been approached and accepted to discuss the idea before the press got wind of it. Me being the mistrusting sod that I am.......is thinking........ errr is this a smoke screen........or is this genuine.............or even just an idea from someone close to the club??????? Wouldn't it be a bit unusual for the press to be able to get hold of info like that before even an interview? Maybe.......not a bad idea though!!

The press got hold of this because we told them to publish it. Whether we told them because we have approached Mitchell, or because we thought the fans would be excited if we said we approached Mitchell, is the only real question.

So pretty well you agree with my smokescreen suggestion then?

Wilson, Norwich guy and Mitchell running tings. Ralph to only come out of the woodwork for sackings and for a soundbite before a new season.

If the club released this (IF, I said) it would be because there was some truth in it...pretty sure that they don't play games as there would be little point in getting fans excited to subsequently let them down. The decisions the board makes are far too important to consider the day to day feelings of fans.

It wouldn't be the first time we've 'leaked' news to the press to try and make it look like we are going for exciting prospects. I can't help but be sceptical anymore. Can't say I really understand this tactic that we've been employing for the last few years, surely you only release this sort of news when it's all but done and dusted.

If we really keep releasing false news then we'd piss off reporters....I understand it if you are using a smokescreen for a player signing, but not otherwise. This is more a case of its true or we are interested* and the media have got wind of it....if it was only in red top papers, I would also add....1 + 1 = 4.

*though may be one of several.

Last year, we gave Wilson a list of players we were targeting in the January window; we signed none of them. One of them, hilariously, was Cenk Tosun (as Qwerty noted); at the time we leaked that, Tosun was already in the UK with an agreement-in-principle with Everton, awaiting a work permit. Something the team would've known had they actually approached Tosun.

And I disagree...teams use the media specifically because the day-to-day feelings of fans are important, because fans are customers. I agree that playing games like that is counterproductive, but a number of teams don't (Newcastle has been at it for the best part of a decade); the idea is that it demonstrates ambition and willingness to spend without having to actually be ambitious or willing to spend.

The media is fine with it, because it's a steady source of genuine information, and if you're Jeremy Wilson you also get just about every exclusive out of the club as part of the package. He has an unmatched level of access to our club, and there's absolutely zero chance that he'd be making stuff up, because that would quickly result in the loss of his access. He's an extension of our public relations department, paid by someone else.

Spot on SinNZ; no problems with your memory! Just add that it was also reported that Levy was always trying to offer potential finds unrealistically low offers, which did not help matters.

Why would Mitchell leave one of the most promising and exciting set ups around to come here? If we were to somehow tempt him then I would say that showed a lot about our ambition. I just can't see it myself

And IF he was offered it, he would surely have a lot more influence, authority and control over football matters than he had here before he left.

Exactly what I mean by it would be a sign that we are showing some ambition. He will be on a fortune at RBL, far more than he was on with us previously or at Spurs I'd wager

I doubt if Reed was on a pittance though, so I guess that there might be a few spare bob floating about for new staff.

A newspaper will have more than one source and there are plenty of agents and intermediaries in the game who will attempt to twist the market.
When it comes to transfers and manager appointments, the real beneficiaries of miss information are the betting companies.

No doubt the vast majority of Wilson’s info comes from the club, but I doubt it’s 100% verified every time

I understand it as a way of setting the narrative and I'm happy to get some more insight into what the board thinks about Hughes etc. But I underestimated how damaging that article about us signing Walcott, Sessegnon etc was. For most average punters that was a huge let down. I guess trying to back Pellegrino was part of the aim but someone in the leaking department either misunderstood what to say or got very carried away.

With much of the media, sure. But football has a weird structure, as it's much more access-driven than the press as a whole: almost every club has a Jeremy Wilson, a journo specifically cultivated to serve as their unofficial spokesperson. When something comes from that individual, it's 100% sanctioned by the club. No agent rumour is going to be juicy enough for Wilson to risk losing a dozen exclusives a year.
