Happy 75th Birthday to the archetypal "one hit wonder" Singer/Songwriter, Norman Greenbaum was born in Malden, Massachusetts in 1942. Here is that hit that reached number one in 1970...(it has been covered twice and both covers have also reached number one in the UK)
Testing the new phone to see how easy linking is. An unsung trio who promised a lot and often delivered, but still managed to largely stay under the radar, was America, despite being produced in the studio by the great George Martin. Here is Cornwall Blank from the album Homecoming:
I was amazed to see this track posted. I grew up listening to bug band jazz through my father and when I was about 8 he bought a double LP of Tommy Dorsey's output from about 1935 through to the early forties. It was a strange set of records because it was largely composed of the jazz instrumentals and totally missed out a lot of the commercial stuff with vocalists so that I have a skewed perception of how good this band was. As a trombonist, I think he was one of the most technically gifted of that generation and the better material he produced is still great fun to listen to even if I don't think his bands were as good as many of his white counterparts like Goodman, Shaw or Herman let alone other bands like Ellington or Basie. There are a number of tracks by the band that I have always enjoyed but it is this record by his small group called The Clambake Seven which is my favourite:-
What an unbelievable guitarist he was. Made “Layla” the incredible track it is and the live Allman Brothers album from the Filmore is one of my go to albums all the time. Tragic loss to music
Happy 52nd Birthday to the brilliantly unique artist, Björk Guðmundsdóttir who was born on this day in Reykjavík. Impossible to categorise the nearest I can get is that she is the "Icelandic Kate Bush". This is an appropriate song from her first band, The Sugarcubes, when I first heard, her vocals just blew me away...
Happy 49th Birtday to local Bassist, Alex James from Blur who was born in Bournemouth on this day in 1968...
And Happy 77th Birthday to Jazz, Blues and Rock Musician and Songwriter, Dr John, who was born Malcolm John Rebennack Jr. in New Orleans on this day in 1940...
I think she is a remarkable talent. Not anything like always my cup of tea music wise, but I can't help admire her abilities. I've got her Debut and Homogenic albums.
Tickets bought for Graspop festival in Belgium in June...Iron Maiden, G and R and Ozzy headlining. Should be a good un!
