Happy 76th Birthday to a legend of early British Rock, Hank Marvin, Lead Guitarist of The Shadows who was born in Newcastle on this day in 1941....
Yet another all time great October birthday, Peter Green, Lead Guitarist and Songwriter most famously of the original Fleetwood Mac was born in Bethnal Green 71 years ago today None other than B.B.King, Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton have stated how good his playing is. It is such a shame that he has battled such a debilitating mental illness for most of his life.. Here is the great man in action....
Still on my Manfred Mann stint. The song that I wanted to link all along has just popped into my head. Bob Dylan's Just Like A Woman. One thing about MM. When they did covers, they often did the definitive one. They were that good. This is the best audio with the best video. There are better videos from the 60s, if you want to check them out, but the audio is a lot worse:
So we close October with yet another great birthday, the Janglemaster, Johnny Marr, Lead Guitarist of The The Smiths, The The, Electronic, The Cribs and many other collaborations was born on this day in Manchester 54 years ago today. Sorry Mozzer fans but his guitar playing is really what made The Smiths such a great band IMO....
Happy 51st Birthday to Adam Horovitz aka Ad-Rock, Lead Singer, Guitarist and Songwriter of Rap Rock band Beastie Boys who was born on this day in New York in 1966...
Okay, so I've had this view that modern music is ****e, but my gf and her sister went on a mission to convince me otherwise by playing this week's top 40. Although most of them didn't do much to change that view, there were a few mediocre ones, and a couple of good ones. One of which was this: As well having a wonderful positive message about overcoming adversity when you're despairing and things look bleak, I do like the voice of the singer. And the video is some powerful stuff. As someone who has struggled with... those kind of issues... it really spoke to me. It's like an Everybody Hurts for the millennial generation.
An excellent band and also the subject of my avatar (in tribute to the late MCA). This song is pretty pertinent right now too:
Great post. Love this guy, but must now point out the folly of the thread title .. https://video.search.yahoo.com/yhs/...87f6ef94e381a8cc49750d77e2bdef97&action=click Should we re-name?
And in celebration of sorting out the poll title and of nothing else in particular, here’s something extraordinary. Those of you who love Jeff Buckley’s music will know the incredible beauty, range and power of his singing. You may not have heard this, which is his appearance at Elvis Costello’s Meltdown Festival at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in 1995. Elvis invited him to sing Henry Purcell’s “Dido’s Lament”, and here is the cello player’s impression of playing for Jeff Buckley. The sound quality isn’t brilliant, but you get an idea of what Buckley was all about.
I always loved Jack Thackray and many of his self-penned songs. Whilst this song doesn't mirror my experiences of women I can't deny its sharp wit and beautiful bouncy rhythm. It's from another era On Again:
I went to the Mayflower last night and saw The Band. First night with the added bonus of the real Take That doing a medley at the end. I can't get this out of my head so I'm going to inflict it on you.
Another of those songs where I believe that the cover became the definitive version. Joe Cocker makes this Beatles song really special. With A Little Help From My Friends. There are some great Woodstock videos featuring this song, but this is easily the best audio I've found:
