And Happy Birthday to Boomtown Rats frontman, Sir Bob Geldof whose real legacy are Band Aid and the Live Aid concerts and the proceeds from them. he is 66 today...
Happy Birthday to personal favourites, The Replacements Bassist, Tommy Stinson, who is 51 today... They were part of the Minniapolis Punk scene with Hüsker Dü and later pioneered Alternative Rock with them...
One of my favourites John Lennon penned Beatles tracks. I was always slightly mystified as to why nobody seemed to like it. I love it in the animated film Yellow Submarine [tbf, I loved the concept of that film], and I sort of love the fact that someone else noticed that it is a really obscure track... for a Beatles track, that is. Here's that video. The Story Behind... "Hey Bulldog": And here is the remastered track and old promo video, which I first saw donkey's years ago. Hey Bulldog:
Another great Beatles track. Possibly the best one of all. A Day In The Life. This stuff is like a musical equivalent of football [although I feel I'm bringing popular art down to the level of football, but bear with me] before the Premier League. It existed. It was of high entertainment and it was cultural. It had its heroes. This is popular music of imagination and art before it became too costly to take a chance. Incidentally, how many would actually like this stuff if they were hearing it for the first time instead of practically being weaned on it? Or would it be too tough a listen?
Now you've started something TSS! Here's possibly my favourite Beatles track, from the last time they played live together on the roof of the Apple building as part of the same shoot as Get Back:
I love almost everything The Beatles ever produced, but if I had to choose a favourite period of theirs it would be Revolver....
Another Ramones birthday today, "the fastest guitar in the west" Johnny Ramone was born John Cummings in Long Island, New York in 1948. Here he is in action....
Ok two highly original and free thinking artists were born on this day, one from each gender. Firstly, John Winston Lennon was born on this day in 1940 and went on to change popular culture around the World. I have chosen 4 solo songs from him as we have had plenty of Beatles posts already... This one is quintessential Lennon and my personal favourite...
And Happy Birthday to Experimental Rocker, Polly Jean Harvey who was born just down the road in Bridport, Dorset 48 years ago today...
