What with the crisis in Ukraine, and the way that Europe has opened its arms to the refugees... Plus any excuse for a bit of Dobbyn.
Heard this on the radio and was convinced that it was a long lost song by Stevie Nicks from the 70/80s that somehow passed me by, turns out it's brand new...
I have had some spare time to play my piano and dug out my book of Kenny Dorham compositions. I am a big fan of Dorham's playing and writing. He is often quoted as being the ultimate under-rated jazz musician and most people seem to realise his greatness once they have heard him even though the likes of Miles. Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan and Clifford Brown usually get more kudos from that era. I love Dorham's work with tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson. All five albums made for Blue Note are exceptional. However, I think Dorham was a brilliant composer too and when you look at his leadsheets, it is fascinating how his tunes works and the unusal harmonic turns they take.
Anyone with an interest in jazz in the 1960s needs to checkout this exceptional album.... As well as Kenny Dorham's excellent playing and writing, I think it also has some of Hank Mobley's best playing on record on it. Mobley is something of a cult figure who was brilliant when on top of his game but his dependence on drugs meant that there are sessions where he seems uninvolved. He is brilliant on this allbum, though.
This popped up on 6 radio I'm fond of African music I'll give more a blast whilst I'm busy in the garden. There's a good looking playlist after this.
Belle and Sebastian are raising funds to help Red Cross in their efforts for Ukraine. The band have also pledged to donate all artist income from their song "If They're Shooting at You," from streaming and digital sales as well as publishing royalties, to the Red Cross.
I regularly watch Rick Beato's Youtube channel as he gives interesting technical breakdowns of many great songs. This video is about one that he co-wrote and performed on and produced that never went anywhere.. And this is a wonderful live performance of it...
Good work David, Nick, Guy and Nitin. I didn’t know David had Ukrainian relatives that compelled him to ‘get the band back together’ one last time. Obviously all money going to the Ukrainian cause.
Riddle me this. Check out 'Huma' on Spotify. There's a nice picture of him. He has 1.2m monthly listeners. One of his tracks has 26.8m streams. Nice work if you can get it. He seems to be an expert in doing tracks to help you sleep, going by the multiple Spotify editorial playlists he's on (and the very, very simple music he makes). He has...wait for it... 828 followers on Spotify. But has over a million monthly listeners. He also, if you look him up, doesn't really seem to exist outside of Spotify. But, y'know, Spotify is totally kosher, right? Maybe check out Alcine Sala - 556,000 monthly listeners - 23 followers.
