There is something weird about a lot of African music in the way instruments such as the guitars are employed in a fashion that often does not adhere to bar lines. I have seen a number of really great African musicians such as Salif Kieta and Fatamadou Diawara who are both pretty sensational live. However, my favourite is Angelique Kidjo who I have seen on numerous occasions and whose records are hugely addictive.

Thanks for the kind words everyone, it's very much appreciated. I agree, LTL about not wanting it to go away. Although the memories are bittersweet, I never want to forget them, especially the days out we had just this summer (including to near your neck of the woods: Hurst Castle).

I'm sorry for your loss as well. Live Aid was before my time but did you ever see the film Bohemian Rhapsody? The live aid scene was amazing, and I've rarely left a cinema feeling as euphoric as I did after seeing Bohemian Rhapsody. Also I saw a comparison and it seems in the film, they matched the actual peformance incredibly closely down to the hand Freddy held the mic in, the way he strut along the stage, everything. Also at that performance, Queen performed my other favourite Queen song:

The fact that song hadn't appeared in the film up until that point also added to it for me personally, as I was like "Yay it's Radio Gaga".

Also it's in the soundtrack for GTA 5 (one of the best GTA soundtracks ever, IMO, best since Vice City) so nowadays I also associate it with driving down the streets of Los santos.

Yes, Bohemian Rhapsody was great fun and although it took a few liberties with Freddy’s reunion with Queen, the Live Aid sequence was identical to the real thing in 1985. Live Aid was one of the great television events of the late 20th century, with some of the greatest names in rock and pop performing at Wembley and the JFK Stadium in Philadelphia, and Queen completely stole the show, almost entirely down to Freddy’s stage presence and personality.

Queen at the time were a very popular band, but that 20 minute slot at Live Aid propelled them into stratospheric superstardom. The visual impact of the Live Aid performance was helped enormously by the crowd mimicking the Radio Gaga video, which itself borrowed scenes from Fritz Lang’s seminal science fiction film Metropolis, from 1927!

I’m sure I must have posted this one before, maybe when it first came out in 2014 and I heard it on 6 Music. I was reminded of it as I just finished watching the Diego Maradona film on All 4 (a must-watch, if you haven’t seen it) and for some strange reason it’s playing during the opening sequences of the film, as Maradona is being driven to the Stadio San Paolo in Naples. Anyway, this is a headphones track:

This is how the classic Bruce Springsteen album, Nebraska, was originally intended to sound with a full band accompaniment with the E Street Band.
Not many songwriters can write a song that inspires a whole Hollywood movie plot but The Boss inspired Sean Penn to write and direct The Indian Runner with his tale of fraternal loyalty on Highway Patrolman...

Oh wow! Thanks, SA. This is my all time favourite Bruce album, as it’s so bleak and (imo) totally wonderful. So to hear it like this is just amazing. I didn’t know there was a live version. Cheers!

    ^^^This @PompeyLapras .

Sorry to hear about your mum. I lost my mother nearly 14 years ago and it is always there, I always want to talk to her, but now I look back with fond memories.

A wise man once said, your mother teaches you everything in life, except how to live without her.

Ha ha - brilliant! Went to the New Forest Folk Festival in 2019 where Ralph played. He was really good, but he did say “this is a song I was lucky enough to write and which is my pension fund .....” :emoticon-0102-bigsm

Utterly brilliant, thanks for posting that Godders. An amazing voice and presence for sure, but what had me spellbound as much as anything was her incredible, nonchalant, guitar playing, without once even glancing at the fretboard.

My fellow guitar players often compile lists of the greatest ever exponents of the art, and sadly this lady never appears on them as she surely deserves to.
