Had to share this, Chrissie singing as well as she ever has and she has found another great guitarist by the sounds of it... I love this woman so much... https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p08p5mbq/radio-2-live-at-home-performances-pretenders
I read about this musician several years ago when I believe he was nominated for a Mercury price. It is staggering to think that someone can manage to have Erik Satie and Tom Waits as influences. I have to declare that I am a Tom Waits fan and always find it interesting to see the musicians he employs in his bands - nearly all A-lister jazz musicians. I think that you can find some interesting "niche" music in between the cracks of different genres. Waits is probably the best example but there are other like Moondog too who are totally weird but for whom this is a place,
One of my favourite bands of the last 20 years are Doves, who went on an an indefinite hiatus after their last album in 2009. They have just released their comeback album, The Universal Want, to critical acclaim and it's a real cracker...
I think that this is one of the best albums of the year. Tomeka Reid is only a handful of jazz cellists but she has also emerged as one of the most exciting improvisors and composers in the music. This is the second album by her quartet with Mary Halvorson (guitar), Jason Roebke (bass) and Tomas Fujiwara on drums. Both records are really rewarding and capture elements of the music played by Oscar Pettiford in the 1950s as well as something edgier and more contemporary.
Here is a clip of them playing live. Mary Halvorson is probably the most original jazz guitarist. You can see that a little bit of Phillip Catherine has rubbed off on her style but the other musician who mentored her is Anthony Braxton who has pulled her music in to a more unorthodox decoration.
Absolute, pure, unadulterated class from start to finish. Christie hasn’t lost one iota of her incredible talent, has she? And I swear her amazing voice gets better by the year. Wonderful stuff, thanks for posting SA!
Here's the latest album from Minneapolis band The Jayhawks if you are partial to a bit of mellow Country Rock, not a bad track on it...
I read that her latest album is very jazz- infuenced, the opening track being a laid back version of John Coltrane's "Niama", best known from the seminal album "Giant Steps" and also includes a cover of a Charlie Mingus composition. It does make you wonder how brought the tastes of some of these pop artists are or indeed their back history. (I think both Debbie Harry and Cybil Shepherd worked with Stan Getz, for example.) The best example of an older female singer I have heard was Shirley Horn. I had a couple of her records but hearing her sing live was an amazing experience. You really felt that she meant the words she was singing.
