The "original" tune "Nature Boy" is a very strange too. It was written in the late 40's by Eden Ahbez and was originally a hit for Nat King Cole. Ahbez is an interesting character and perhaps the first ever hippy. I have always loved this version of the tune by the late, great Abbey Lincoln. ,. The whole of the album is one of the best discs of the 1990s and amongst the best music Lincoln ever produced. .
As well as singing standards, Abbey Lincoln was a great song writer in her own right. This track is wonderful. Her lyrics are always worth listening too - I have to admit that I find her far superior to her friend Nina Simone. Pat Metheny in the guitarist.
Kaito I saw Johnny Winter at Vienne shortly before he died and was massively disappointed in him. However, I have also seen the Tedeschi Trucks band at the same venue and they bowled he over. I love that band and have all their records albeit the last one was a disappointment. I have been playing one of their studio albums a lot over the holiday. This is a great tune from their debut record.
With recent films made about music stars like Rocketman I thought I'd share an oldie with Gary Busey playing Buddy Holly. I thought he was brilliant in this scene
Late Festive Greeting to all and everyone here!!!! I just love Mario voice. It is as good as if not better than his fellow crooners like Sinatra, Dean Martin save Nat King Cole, from decades ago.
And for those feeling funky!!!! Something from the best group to emerge from our area - well 3 of the 4 were local-
Also from the Buddy Holly story. This was a big thing back then but happily times have changed for the better.
The Nat King Cole version of Nature Boy (a totally different song from Nick Cave's, lets not confuse people) is also one of my all time favourites. Forever associated with my dad in my mind, it has an other-worldly sumptous production and Nat's glorious voice. Some music is just timeless. There was a radio programme (on R4) about Ahbez around a year ago, he certainly was 'odd'.
After posting This woman's work by Kate Bush it reminded me of her debut song Wuthering Heights in 1978, Did you know at 19 years of age she became the first woman to top the UK charts with a self written song?
From her magnum opus, Hounds of Love. Donald Sutherland admired her work so much that he offered his services for the video buckshee apparently.
Listening to Kate, i've just been reminded of a school friend of mine that was shot by "friendly fire" with an older more senior soldier while on patrol in the border area in Northern Ireland just after returning there from some leave at Christmas. He was a Private and only 18 and had said that he did not want to return there but couldn't desert or go AWOL. This song came out around the same time R.I.P. Gerald Hardy...
