Merry Xmas everyone . I Love drums . I am seeing this genius in Southampton next month ( with bootleg Blondie ) .
I’m listening to Brian Cox and Brian Eno discussing stuff on Radio 6 with Shaun Keaveney. There was a fascinating bit where Eno was talking about working with David Bowie on the Heroes album in Berlin. Having recorded all the tracks, Bowie decided he wanted Robert Fripp to play guitar on them, so Eno phoned Fripp in New York. 8 hours later, Fripp arrived in the studio, and with no foreknowledge of the chord structure or even the key of any song, or even hearing anything, sat straight down and played over the tape. Here’s the first track on the album, with Fripp’s first and only take, having not even heard the track before:
Sad news. Honey Lantree, the drummer of the Honeycombs, has died aged 75. Here’s their biggest hit, from 1964: RIP Honey
I saw Santana at Vienne about ten years ago. I find him one of those musicians whose reputation has changed over the years. Back in the early 70's he would have been considered as a rock musician but I think the music has changed so much now that it quite easily appeals to jazz fans. He has worked with jazz musicians such as Wayne Shorter and is married to drummer Cindy Blackman but the most significant thing about him is that he was more influenced by John Coltrane than any other musician. As a live act, the musical level was right up there. He is the real deal.
Ok, I have to honour Redder's tremendous individual performance and superb goal in some way and here's the only song that I could find with a part of his name in it. It just so happens to be one of my personal favourite Motown tunes too...
it's Christmas Eve here in Serbia. It's when Gypsy brass bands walk the streets. One just passed my window. I'm pretty sure they were playing this song!
Eric Haydock, one of the founding members of The Hollies passed away yesterday. Although he left in 1966, he played on some of their biggest hits. I'm on my crappy tablet otherwise I'd post one of their earliest hits - Just One Look.
