Matt Johnson could always write a great song, this was from The The's excellent debut album Soul Mining...
This London band were originally on the legendary Rough Trade Punk label but then moved to Cherry Red Records and released this single from their underrated album, Eligible Bachelors...
Their best by a distance for me. "Well you didn't wake up this morning 'cause you didn't go to bed. You were watching the whites of your eyes turn red". Genius.
When I heard this song from Billy Bragg's debut album, Life's a Riot with Spy Vs Spy, it took me back to my days on the dole a couple of years before...
And I could identify with this from Kurt Cobain's favourite Japanese all girl Pop Punk band, Shonen Knife's Burning Farm album..
This is my favourite track from The Police's massive hit album Synchronicity, not sure about the Duran Duran style video though...
Here is one from another LA Paisley Underground band, The Rain Parade's wonderful debut album. Emergency Third Rail Power Trip...
This was Detroit Power Pop band, The Romantics' biggest hit single and Buck's Fizz covered it in '84...
1983 introduced me to Billy Bragg and Aztec Camera. Saints Alive has covered the former so here's an absolute classic from the latter with Roddy Frame nailing the acoustic guitar solo.
"Many miles away something crawls from the slime of a dark Scottish lake"?? Haha, some bizarre lyrics in this one. Some kind of Cthulu like entity is evolving from sludge? ... Its now knocking on the door of a cottage by the lake ... You don't get - what ever that is - often in pop! And crikey that "The The" one nails 'melancholic'.
These are great! Very much counter(culture) to the 80's. Never heard of the "LA Paisley Underground " I would normally think such revivalism kicked in in later decades. The first pop 'retro' revival scene?
There were a few genre revivals before that in the UK anyway BFB, Blues and Folk in the 60s, 50s Rock n Roll in the 70s, and the Mod and Ska revivals after Punk but the 60s inspired Paisley Underground scene in California in the early 80s was brilliant.
Spandau were always much better than ultra poseurs, Duran Duran and Gary Kemp is a decent songwriter (useless actor though!)...
Very underrated group IMHO . Here is my Favourite . As always , video and LIVE version . Motley Crue etc , F off !
Olivia Chaney is currently playing live on Mark Radcliffe's Folk show on Radio 2, Chilcs... https://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/play/live:bbc_radio_two
