Digressing from the 80’s nostalgia for a moment, but today marks the 100th birthday of one of America’s greatest composers, musicians, and general good guys. I believe I posted some of his best-known stuff erroneously earlier in the year, but here’s Leonard Bernstein playing the piano and conducting:
Here is a classic from another George. If you are feeling miserable tonight, (can´t think why though), here is something to lift your mood.
And from 1982, Light of the World!!! This band makes me wish my parents had continued to live in the Greater London área through my childhood and teenage years. Light of the World were the group that spawned Kenny Wellington.
I'm too gutted to post on the match thread tonight, i'll wait until I have digested that result overnight but I can still post today's songs from my '81 collection... This one is from New Wave band Fischer-Z's last album with their classic line up, the Cold War inspired Red Skies over Paradise..
This Manchester Post Punk/Dream Pop band, The Duratti Column were one of the first to sign to Tony Wilson's iconic Factory Records. This is off of their second album, LC....
This Edinburgh band, Josef K were on one of the first successful Indie record labels, Postcard Records and were a big influence on later Indie bands, The Wedding Present, Franz Ferdinand and The Futureheads. This was a re-release of their first single...
Here are the final five of selected songs that I bought in 1981.. This is George Harrison's response to John Lennon's murder from his album, Somewhere in England...
This is the title track from New South Wales New Wave band, The Reels second album Quasimodo's Dream.... Atmospheric video...
And here is an Aussie Post Punk band that was championed by John Peel despite limited commercial success. It was also the vehicle in which Nick Cave first made his name and this song written by him is typically dark and brooding from the band's second album, Prayers on Fire...
Another notoriously controversial band were NYC's Punk/Shock Rock band, Plasmatics and this is from their second album, Beyond the Valley of 1984...
And finally i'm going to break my personal rule of one year for any artist because this just happens to be my favourite song from one of my top albums ever. It is just an almost perfect combination of great songwriting, musicianship (from EC and The Attractions) and production (from Nick Lowe) and is from Costello's magnus opus, Trust... 1982 starts tomorrow...
Still in 1981, and for @Velcro Roy for yesterday, @fatletiss for next Friday and me for next Saturday:
Lovers of modern classical music will appreciate this rendition of the great song O Fortuna from Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana complete with the words. I wept real tears of laughter:
Right, on to 1982 and not much changed for me professionally, I spent the whole year on the production line at Dimplex (beggars can't be choosers..), but I did fall hopelessly in love for the first time, wonder what you're doing now Belinda?. In the news The Falklands War started (when I heard at work on the radio everyone was like why are the Argies invading a Scottish island?!..), England were in their first World Cup for 12 years in Spain and Channel 4 started broadcasting. Being in love never interfered with my passion of collecting and listening to new music though and here is some of what I purchased that year... Here is the delayed posting of a Dexy's song, this one from the excellent Too-Rye-Ay album... The Jocky Wilson reference in the video is because of the infamous TOTP appearance when they performed the song in front of a massive picture of the portly Scottish darts player!...
Woolstonian has posted this before, but i'm posting it because it is my preferred version of the Bangles when they were part of the LA Paisley Underground scene before they made it big...
