John Bonham, English rock drummer (Led Zeppelin), born in Redditch in 1948, (d) 1980... Dave and Chilcs have covered him already, I'll just add what Dave Grohl said about him.. "John Bonham played the drums like someone who didn't know what was going to happen next—like he was teetering on the edge of a cliff. No one has come close to that since, and I don't think anybody ever will. I think he will forever be the greatest drummer of all time."

Quite intrigued to read about the Psychedelic Furs on an earlier post. Not sure if anyone is appreciative that the saxophonist with the is band is Chicago based avant gardist Mars Williams who can be found of a number of albums by the likes of Harrison Bankhead and Ken Vandermark. Here he is with pianist Paul Giallorenzo's "GitGo Quintet" which also includes the wonderful Jeb Bishop on trombone.
With regard to the earlier Miles post, I think most people agree this was his best band. TOny Williams was only 17 when he joined this quintet but he managed to revolutionise drumming. Got to say that Herbie Hancock is probably my favourite pianist but the other members of the band, Wayne Shorter and Ron Carter helped elevate this group to what many believe was the greatest jazz group ever.
With reference to the earlier Benny Goodman post, I love the sextet tracks which featured the pioneering electric guitar of Charlie Christian which was not only innovative from a technical point of few but something of a precursor to the way musicians would open jazz up with Be-bop.
