One of my favourite genres, I think that you can draw a direct line back to Link Wray in the late 50s who initiated the use of distorted power chords and then Dave Davies who opened up his amp and messed about with a razor blade inside to produce the early Kinks sound. This is quite well known...
Link Wray formed a great partnership with Robert Gordon in the 70s/80s. Robert Gordon still gigging now I believe, though I don't think he ever leaves New York. I'll see what I can dig out on my laptop later.
