Happy 76th Birthday to founding member, Keyboardist and Co-Songwriter of 60s R&B band The Animals, Alan Price who was born on this day in Washington, County Durham in 1942. After leaving the band in 1965 he has worked with several other artist as well as Solo as a Singer/Songwriter, Musician and Musical arranger... His keyboard work was a key element of The Animals' distinctive sound...
I kinda liked this when I was a kid but it wasn't what I usually liked, I later found out what the song was about of course..
Only one notable Music Birthday today and it is smooth Soul Singer/Songwriter and Record Producer, Luther Vandross who was born in the Bronx, New York in 1951, had a long and successful Solo career until he suffered a stroke in 2003, he died two years later aged 54...
He worked with many top artists such as Diana Ross and Beyonce and with David Bowie on his classic Blue Eyed Soul album, Young Americans. He co-wrote this with Bowie...
It was 40 years ago today that we lost the queen of English folk-rock. Alexandra Elene Maclean Denny was just 31 when she died of a cerebral haemorrhage believed to have been caused by the effects of drinking alcohol while on the painkillers she was prescribed for headaches following a fall downstairs a few weeks before. Sandy cut her teeth in the folk clubs around London in the mid 60’s until she started singing with the Strawbs. The first of her own songs to be recorded with them was probably her best-known composition:
Sandy was auditioned by Fairport Convention (band members say it was more like her auditioning them) who were looking for a replacement for Judy Dyble and recorded 3 albums with them in 1968 and 1969. Her songwriting began to gather pace, encouraged by her collaboration with Richard Thompson, and the haunting “Fotheringay” was the first to appear:
On her second album with Fairport, the definitive version of Sandy’s best-loved song appeared. This was voted the favourite folk song of all time by Radio 2 listeners:
Sandy left Fairport Convention In December 1969 and formed her own band Fotheringay with her partner Trevor Lucas and guitarist Jerry Donahue. They only released one album before Sandy broke the band up and pursued her solo career. This beautiful song is one of my favourites:
Sandy released a series of brilliant solo albums and even rejoined Fairport for a while in the mid 70’s, but she was always a restless spirit. This is from possibly her most accomplished solo album:
Yeah - voice of an angel. Lucky enough to see her with Fotheringay in 1970 (I guess it was) and it was a magical gig. Thanks for posting these Chilco!
Yes, Fotheringay only existed during 1970 I believe! Sandy, being Sandy, of course used all the Fotheringay musicians, as well as some from Fairport, on her solo work.
